@article{fdi:010073041, title = {{G}enomes of all known members of a {P}lasmodium subgenus reveal paths to virulent human malaria}, author = {{O}tto, {T}. {D}. and {G}ilabert, {A}. and {C}rellen, {T}. and {B}ohme, {U}. and {A}rnathau, {C}. and {S}anders, {M}. and {O}yola, {S}. {O}. and {O}kouga, {A}. {P}. and {B}oundenga, {L}. and {W}illaume, {E}. and {N}goubangoye, {B}. and {M}oukodoum, {N}. {D}. and {P}aupy, {C}hristophe and {D}urand, {P}. and {R}ougeron, {V}. and {O}llomo, {B}. and {R}enaud, {F}. and {N}ewbold, {C}. and {B}erriman, {M}. and {P}rugnolle, {F}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}lasmodium falciparum, the most virulent agent of human malaria, shares a recent common ancestor with the gorilla parasite {P}lasmodium praefalciparum. {L}ittle is known about the other gorilla-and chimpanzee-infecting species in the same ({L}averania) subgenus as {P}. falciparum, but none of them are capable of establishing repeated infection and transmission in humans. {T}o elucidate underlying mechanisms and the evolutionary history of this subgenus, we have generated multiple genomes from all known {L}averania species. {T}he completeness of our dataset allows us to conclude that interspecific gene transfers, as well as convergent evolution, were important in the evolution of these species. {S}triking copy number and structural variations were observed within gene families and one, stevor, shows a host-specific sequence pattern. {T}he complete genome sequence of the closest ancestor of {P}. falciparum enables us to estimate the timing of the beginning of speciation to be 40,000-60,000 years ago followed by a population bottleneck around 4,000-6,000 years ago. {O}ur data allow us also to search in detail for the features of {P}. falciparum that made it the only member of the {L}averania able to infect and spread in detail for the features of {P}. falciparum that made it the only member of the {L}averania able to infect and spread in humans.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}ature {M}icrobiology}, volume = {3}, numero = {6}, pages = {687--697}, ISSN = {2058-5276}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1038/s41564-018-0162-2}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010073041}, }
