@article{fdi:010072809, title = {{M}ulti-temporal flood mapping and satellite altimetry used to evaluate the flood dynamics of the {B}olivian {A}mazon wetlands}, author = {{O}vando, {A}. and {M}artinez, {J}ean-{M}ichel and {T}omasella, {J}. and {R}odriguez, {D}. {A}. and von {R}andow, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {B}olivian {A}mazon wetlands are extensive floodplains distributed over the {M}amore, {B}eni, {M}adre de {D}ios and {G}uapore {R}ivers. {L}ocated within the upper {M}adeira {R}iver {B}asin, the wetlands play important roles in regulating the biogeochemical processes and hydrological cycle of the region. {I}n addition, they have major ecological and hydrological relevance for the entire {A}mazon {B}asin. {T}hese wetlands are characterized by the occurrence of episodic floods that result from contrasting hydro-meteorological processes in the {A}ndean {M}ountain region, the piedmont area and the {A}mazon lowlands. {I}n this study, we characterized the flood dynamics of the region using multi-temporal flood mapping based on optical altimetry ({MODIS} - {M}oderate {R}esolution {I}maging {S}pectroradiometer - {M}*{D}09{A}1) and satellite altimetry ({ENVISAT} {RA}-2 and {SARAL} {A}lti{K}a altimeters). {T}his study provides new insights regarding the frequency, magnitude and spatial distribution of exogenous floods, which are created by flood waves from the {A}ndes; and endogenous floods, which result from runoff originating in the lowlands. {T}he maximum extent of flooding during 2001-2014 was 43144 km(2) in the {M}amore {B}asin and 34852 km(2) in the {G}uapore {B}asin, and the total surface water storage in these floodplains reached 94 km3. {T}he regionalization of flood regimes based on water stage time series signatures allowed those regions that are exposed to frequent floods, which are generally located along rivers without a direct connection with the {A}ndes, to be distinguished from floodplains that are more dependent on flood waves originating in the {A}ndes and its piedmonts. {T}his information is of great importance for understanding the roles of these wetlands in the provision of ecosystem services.}, keywords = {{L}lanos de {M}oxos ; {S}atellite altimetry ; {H}ydrology ; {F}lood dynamics ; {BOLIVIE} ; {AMAZONE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {A}pplied {E}arth {O}bservation and {G}eoinformation}, volume = {69}, numero = {}, pages = {27--40}, ISSN = {0303-2434}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jag.2018.02.013}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072809}, }
