@article{fdi:010072708, title = {{S}oil erodibility mapping using the {RUSLE} model to prioritize erosion control in the {W}adi {S}ahouat basin, {N}orth-{W}est of {A}lgeria}, author = {{T}oubal, {A}. {K}. and {A}chite, {M}. and {O}uillon, {S}ylvain and {D}ehni, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oil losses must be quantified over watersheds in order to set up protection measures against erosion. {T}he main objective of this paper is to quantify and to map soil losses in the {W}adi {S}ahouat basin (2140 km(2)) in the north-west of {A}lgeria, using the {R}evised {U}niversal {S}oil {L}oss {E}quation ({RUSLE}) model assisted by a {G}eographic {I}nformation {S}ystem ({GIS}) and remote sensing. {T}he {M}odel {B}uilder of the {GIS} allowed the automation of the different operations for establishing thematic layers of the model parameters: the erosivity factor ({R}), the erodibility factor ({K}), the topographic factor ({LS}), the crop management factor ({C}), and the conservation support practice factor ({P}). {T}he average annual soil loss rate in the {W}adi {S}ahouat basin ranges from 0 to 255 t ha(-1) year(-1), maximum values being observed over steep slopes of more than 25% and between 600 and 1000 m elevations. 3.4% of the basin is classified as highly susceptible to erosion, 4.9% with a medium risk, and 91.6% at a low risk. {G}oogle {E}arth reveals a clear conformity with the degree of zones to erosion sensitivity. {B}ased on the soil loss map, 32 subbasins were classified into three categories by priority of intervention: high, moderate, and low. {T}his priority is available to sustain a management plan against sediment filling of the {O}uizert damat the basin outlet. {T}he method enhancing the {RUSLE} model and confrontation with {G}oogle {E}arth can be easily adapted to other watersheds.}, keywords = {{E}rosion ; {W}adi {S}ahouat ; {RUSLE} ; {M}odel {B}uilder ; {GIS} ; {R}emote sensing ; {A}lgeria ; {ALGERIE} ; {WADI} {SAHOUAT} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {M}onitoring and {A}ssessment}, volume = {190}, numero = {4}, pages = {art. 210 [22 p.]}, ISSN = {0167-6369}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1007/s10661-018-6580-z}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072708}, }
