@article{fdi:010072705, title = {{C}onspectus of {P}alicourea section {P}otaroenses ({R}ubiaceae), with a new species from {F}rench {G}uiana and a new combination}, author = {{D}elprete, {P}iero and {L}achenaud, {O}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ontext - {T}he species of {P}sychotria subgen. {H}eteropsychotria have recently been transferred to {P}alicourea, following the results of molecular studies showing that they form a monophyletic group with the latter. {T}his paper presents a conspectus of {P}alicourea sect. {P}otaroenses (formerly {P}sychotria subgen. {H}eteropsychotria sect. {P}otaroenses), discusses the characters of the section, and provides a key to the species. {A} new species recently collected in {F}rench {G}uiana is described and illustrated, and one new combination is included. {M}ethods - {T}his paper is based on direct study of herbarium material from {BR}, {CAY}, {F}, {K}, {L}, {NY}, {U} and {US}, and additional type specimens from {F}, {K}, {MO}, {P}, {RB}, and {VEN} were consulted online. {T}wo of the species, including the new one, have also been studied in the field. {C}ommon practices of herbarium taxonomy have been applied. {R}esults - {P}alicourea sect. {P}otaroenses is characterized by the capitate inflorescences surrounded by an involucre of 4-20 elliptic, yellow to red bracts, the leaves with lateral veins strongly ascending and almost reaching the margin, the long tubular calyx, the unusually long corolla tube for the genus, and the peculiar stipules, consisting of an internal sheath and two interpetiolar pieces connate to the sheath by their central part. {T}he section includes eight species: {P}alicourea aetantha ({S}andwith) {D}elprete & {J}. {H}. {K}irkbr., {P}. fanshawei ({S}tandl.) {D}elprete & {J}. {H}. {K}irkbr., {P}. formosissima ({S}teyerm.) {D}elprete & {O}. {L}achenaud, {P}. phaneroneura ({S}tandl.) {B}orhidi, {P}. potaroensis ({S}andwith) {D}elprete & {J}. {H}. {K}irkbr., {P}. psittacina ({S}teyerm.) {D}elprete & {J}. {H}. {K}irkbr., {P}. spectabilis ({S}teyerm.) {B}orhidi, and the new species {P}. aurantiosplendens {O}. {L}achenaud & {D}elprete. {T}he latter is most similar to {P}. psittacina, from which it can be separated by the dense patent indumentum of the stems, calyx lobes, and inner side of the bracts, and the smaller size of the latter; it also resembles {P}. spectabilis and {P}. formosissima, but differs in having the stipules with four lobes on each side (vs. two), the bracts nearly glabrous outside (vs. densely hirsute on both sides) and the calyx lobes much more pubescent than the tube (vs. the calyx uniformly hairy). {I}t is only known from a small area on the upper {S}innamary {R}iver, north-central {F}rench {G}uiana, and is evaluated as {E}ndangered ({EN} {D}1) according to {IUCN} criteria.}, keywords = {{F}rench {G}uiana ; {G}uiana {S}hield ; {P}alicourea ; {P}sychotria subgenus ; {H}eteropsychotria ; {P}sychotrieae ; {P}alicoureeae ; {S}innamary ; {GUYANE} {FRANCAISE} ; {SINNAMARY}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {E}cology and {E}volution}, volume = {151}, numero = {1}, pages = {119--129}, ISSN = {2032-3913}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.5091/plecevo.2018.1356}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072705}, }
