@article{fdi:010072679, title = {{C}enozoic sediment budget of {W}est {A}frica and the {N}iger delta}, author = {{G}rimaud, {J}. {L}. and {R}ouby, {D}. and {C}hardon, {D}ominique and {B}eauvais, {A}nicet}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}ong-term (10(6-7)yr) clastic sedimentary fluxes to the ocean provide first-order constraints on the response of continental surfaces to both tectonic and climatic forcing as well as the supply that builds the stratigraphic record. {H}ere, we use the dated and regionally correlated relict lateritic landforms preserved over {S}ub-{S}aharan {W}est {A}frica to map and quantify regional denudation as well as the export of main catchments for three time intervals (45-24, 24-11 and 11-0{M}a). {A}t the scale of {W}est {A}frica, denudation rates are low (ca. 7m{M}yr(-1)) and total clastic export rate represents 18.5x10(3)km(3){M}yr(-1). {E}xport rate variations among the different drainage groups depend on the drainage area and, more importantly, rock uplift. {D}enuded volumes and offshore accumulations are of the same magnitude, with a noticeably balanced budget between the {N}iger {R}iver delta and its catchment. {T}his supports the establishment of the modern {N}iger catchment before 29{M}a, which then provided sufficient clastic material to the {N}iger delta by mainly collecting the erosion products of the {H}oggar hotspot swell. {A}ccumulations on the remaining {E}quatorial {A}tlantic margin of {A}frica suggest an apparent export deficit but the sediment budget is complicated by the low resolution of the offshore data and potential lateral sediment supply from the {N}iger delta. {F}urther distortion of the depositional record by intracontinental transient storage and lateral input or destabilization of sediments along the margin may be identified in several locations, prompting caution when deducing continental denudation rates from accumulation only.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DE} {L}'{OUEST} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE} ; {NIGER} {DELTA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}asin {R}esearch}, volume = {30}, numero = {2}, pages = {169--186}, ISSN = {0950-091{X}}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1111/bre.12248}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072679}, }
