@article{fdi:010072495, title = {{S}edimentary evidence of historical and prehistorical earthquakes along the {V}enta de {B}ravo {F}ault {S}ystem, {A}cambay {G}raben ({C}entral {M}exico)}, author = {{L}acan, {P}. and {O}rtuno, {M}. and {A}udin, {L}aurence and {P}erea, {H}. and {B}aize, {S}. and {A}guirre-{D}iaz, {G}. and {Z}uniga, {F}. {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {V}enta de {B}ravo normal fault is one of the longest structures in the intra-arc fault system of the {T}rans-{M}exican {V}olcanic {B}elt. {I}t defines, together with the {P}astores {F}ault, the 80 km long southern margin of the {A}cambay {G}raben. {W}e focus on the westernmost segment of the {V}enta de {B}ravo {F}ault and provide new paleoseismological information, evaluate its earthquake history, and assess the related seismic hazard. {W}e analyzed five trenches, distributed at three different sites, in which {H}olocene surface faulting offsets interbedded volcanoclastic, fiuvio-lacustrine and colluvial deposits. {D}espite the lack of known historical destructive earthquakes along this fault, we found evidence of at least eight earthquakes during the late {Q}uaternary. {O}ur results indicate that this is one of the major seismic sources of the {A}cambay {G}raben, capable of producing by itself earthquakes with magnitudes ({M}-w) up to 6.9, with a slip rate of 0.22-0.24 mm yr(-1) and a recurrence interval between 1940 and 2390 years. {I}n addition, a possible multi-fault rupture of the {V}enta de {B}ravo {F}ault together with other faults of the {A}cambay {G}raben could result in a {M}w > 7 earthquake. {T}hese new slip rates, earthquake recurrence rates, and estimation of slips per event help advance our understanding of the seismic hazard posed by the {V}enta de {B}ravo {F}ault and provide new parameters for further hazard assessment.}, keywords = {{A}ctive faults ; {S}edimentary recording ; {P}aleoearthquakes ; {S}eismic hazard ; {A}cambay {G}raben ; {C}entral {M}exico ; {MEXIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}edimentary {G}eology}, volume = {365}, numero = {}, pages = {62--77}, ISSN = {0037-0738}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.sedgeo.2017.12.008}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072495}, }
