@article{fdi:010072478, title = {{U}ncovering a new current : the {S}outhwest {MA}dagascar {C}oastal {C}urrent}, author = {{R}amanantsoa, {J}. {D}. and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {K}rug, {M}. and {G}ula, {J}. and {R}ouault, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}ruise data sets, satellite remote sensing observations, and model data analyses are combined to highlight the existence of a coastal surface poleward flow in the southwest of {M}adagascar: the {S}outhwest {MA}dagascar {C}oastal {C}urrent ({SMACC}). {T}he {SMACC} is a relatively shallow (<300 m) and narrow (<100 km wide) warm and salty coastal surface current, which flows along the south western coast of {M}adagascar toward the south, opposite to the dominant winds. {T}he warm water surface signature of the {SMACC} extends from 22 degrees {S} (upstream) to 26.4 degrees {S} (downstream). {T}he {SMACC} exhibits a seasonal variability: more intense in summer and reduced in winter. {T}he average volume transport of its core is about 1.3 {S}v with a mean summer maximum of 2.1 {S}v. {I}t is forced by a strong cyclonic wind stress curl associated with the bending of the trade winds along the southern tip of {M}adagascar. {T}he {SMACC} directly influences the coastal upwelling regions south of {M}adagascar. {I}ts existence is likely to influence local fisheries and larval transport patterns, as well as the connectivity with the {A}gulhas {C}urrent, affecting the returning branch of the global overturning circulation. {P}lain {L}anguage {S}ummary {A} new coastal current: the {S}outhwest {MA}dagascar {C}oastal {C}urrent ({SMACC}) has been uncovered. {T}his coastal current flows along the southwestern coast of {M}adagascar toward the south. {T}he {SMACC} is a relatively shallow (<300 m) and narrow (<100 km wide) warm and salty surface current, which is more intense in summer and reduced in winter. {T}he {S}outhwest {MA}dagascar {C}oastal {C}urrent has a downstream impact on the upwelling system at the south of {M}adagascar which is a physical process inducing local fertilization. {A}s such, the {S}outhwest {MA}dagascar {C}oastal {C}urrent has key implications for studies about the greater {A}gulhas {C}urrent system, remote connections between oceanographic systems, biophysical coupling in upwelling systems, fisheries management, local livelihoods, and so forth. {T}he uncovering of the {SMACC} has significant implications for the improved broader understanding of ocean systems around the world.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eophysical {R}esearch {L}etters}, volume = {45}, numero = {4}, pages = {1930--1938}, ISSN = {0094-8276}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1002/2017gl075900}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072478}, }
