@article{fdi:010072422, title = {{A} study of {B}angladesh's sub-surface water storages using satellite products and data assimilation scheme}, author = {{K}haki, {M}. and {F}orootan, {E}. and {K}uhn, {M}. and {A}wange, {J}. and {P}apa, {F}abrice and {S}hum, {C}. {K}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}limate change can significantly influence terrestrial water changes around the world particularly in places that have been proven to be more vulnerable such as {B}angladesh. {I}n the past few decades, climate impacts, together with those of excessive human water use have changed the country's water availability structure. {I}n this study, we use multi-mission remotely sensed measurements along with a hydrological model to separately analyze groundwater and soil moisture variations for the period 2003-2013, and their interactions with rainfall in {B}angladesh. {T}o improve the model's estimates of water storages, terrestrial water storage ({TWS}) data obtained from the {G}ravity {R}ecovery {A}nd {C}limate {E}xperiment ({GRACE}) satellite mission are assimilated into the {W}orld-{W}ide {W}ater {R}esources {A}ssessment ({W}3{RA}) model using the ensemble-based sequential technique of the {S}quare {R}oot {A}nalysis ({SQRA}) filter. {W}e investigate the capability of the data assimilation approach to use a non-regional hydrological model for a regional case study. {B}ased on these estimates, we investigate relationships between the model derived sub-surface water storage changes and remotely sensed precipitations, as well as altimetry-derived river level variations in {B}angladesh by applying the empirical mode decomposition ({EMD}) method. {A} larger correlation is found between river level heights and rainfalls (78% on average) in comparison to groundwater storage variations and rainfalls (57% on average). {T}he results indicate a significant decline in groundwater storage (similar to 32% reduction) for {B}angladesh between 2003 and 2013, which is equivalent to an average rate of 8.73 +/- 2.45 mm/year.}, keywords = {{B}angladesh ; {G}roundwater storage ; {D}ata assimilation ; {H}ydrological modelling ; {GRACE} ; {BANGLADESH}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cience of the {T}otal {E}nvironment}, volume = {625}, numero = {}, pages = {963--977}, ISSN = {0048-9697}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.scitotenv.2017.12.289}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072422}, }
