@article{fdi:010072391, title = {{L}ong-term variability of supratidal coastal boulder activation in {B}rittany ({F}rance)}, author = {{A}utret, {R}. and {D}odet, {G}. and {S}uanez, {S}. and {R}oudaut, {G}ildas and {F}ichaut, {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}igh-energy supratidal coastal boulder deposit ({SCBD}) dynamics were investigated on {V}ierge {I}sland and {P}ors {C}arn {P}oint, north and south of western {B}rittany, {F}rance, respectively. {M}orphological changes induced by boulder transport and quarrying were quantified using high-resolution topographic survey data taken between 2012 and 2017. {A}dditional in-situ wave parameters and water levels were also recorded over this period (2014-2017) in order to compute the maximum water levels and assess the relationship between {SCBD} morphological changes and specific hydrodynamic conditions. {D}uring extreme water levels (for maximum water levels exceeding a one in ten year event), {SCBD}s were broadly reworked (up to 40% of the total volume). {D}uring lower intensity events, for which maximum water levels were still very high, morphological changes represented 1% to 5% of the total volume. {T}hese morphological and hydrodynamic observations were then used to calibrate a chronology of {SCBD} activation events based on 70 years of hindcast winter maximum water levels. {T}hese long-term time-series showed great interannual variability in {SCBD} activation but no significant long-term trend. {W}inter-frequency {SCBD} activation was better correlated to the {WEPA} index (r = 0.46) than the {NAO} index (r = 0.1). {T}herefore, the {WEPA} index can be considered to be a more significant climate proxy for assessing storm-related geomorphic changes in the temperate latitudes of the {N}-{E} {A}tlantic basin (36 degrees-52 degrees {N}), including the {B}rittany coast. {T}he potential of {SCBD}s as a morphological storm proxy for macrotidal high-energy rocky coasts is addressed.}, keywords = {{R}ocky coast ; {B}oulder ridge ; {E}xtra-tropical cyclone ; {K}ite aerial ; photography ; {FRANCE} ; {BRETAGNE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eomorphology}, volume = {304}, numero = {}, pages = {184--200}, ISSN = {0169-555{X}}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.geomorph.2017.12.028}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072391}, }
