@article{fdi:010072356, title = {{A}bortion in two francophone {A}frican countries : a study of whether women have begun to use misoprostol in {B}enin and {B}urkina {F}aso}, author = {{B}axerres, {C}arine and {B}oko, {I}. and {K}onkobo, {A}. and {O}uattara, {F}atoumata and {G}uillaume, {A}gn{\`e}s}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjectives: {T}his study aimed to document the means women use to obtain abortions in the capital cities of {B}enin and {B}urkina {F}aso, and to learn whether or not use of misoprostol has become an alternative to other methods of abortion, and the implications for future practice. {S}tudy design: {W}e conducted in-depth, qualitative interviews between 2014 and 2015 with 34 women - 21 women in {C}otonou ({B}enin) and 13 women in {O}uagadougou ({B}urkina {F}aso) about their pathways to abortion. {T}o obtain a diverse sample in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, we recruited the women through our own knowledge networks, in health facilities where women are treated for unsafe abortion complications, and in schools in {B}enin. {R}esults: {T}he 34 women had had 69 abortions between them. {T}wenty-five of the women had had 37 abortions in the previous 5 years; the other abortions were 5-20 years before. {P}athways to abortion were very different in the two cities. {L}engthy and difficult pathways with unsafe methods often led to complications in {O}ugadougou, whereas most {C}otonou women went to small, private health centers. {S}ix of the 37 abortions in the previous 5 years involved misoprostol use, and were all among educated women with significant social and economic capital and personal contact with clinicians. {C}onclusions: {U}se of misoprostol for abortion has appeared in both {C}otonou and {O}ugadougou in the past 5 years. {E}vidence that the use of misoprostol for abortion occurred among women with the most access to information and resources in this study suggests that increased awareness of and use of misoprostol in both countries is likely in the coming years.}, keywords = {{A}bortion care-seeking pathways ; {M}edical abortion ; {M}isoprostol ; {U}nsafe ; abortion ; {F}rancophone {A}frican countries ; {A}frica ; {BENIN} ; {BURKINA} {FASO}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontraception}, volume = {97}, numero = {2}, pages = {130--136}, ISSN = {0010-7824}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.contraception.2017.10.011}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072356}, }
