The Andean bear is the only bear species that lives in South America and is endemic of the tropical Andes. In the Ecuadorian páramo, Andean bears live up to above 4300 m, at the highest end of the species' altitudinal range. There are fewer and fewer Andean bears and encounters with them are increasingly rare. Today, they are one of the most endangered mammals in the world. Like the giant panda and the polar bear, flagship species that have come to represent the conservation of wildlife as a whole, Andean bears are a flagship species for the conservation of páramos and the water they provide. All sale proceeds from this book are donated to the FONAG (Fondo para la proteccion del Agua, Quito, Ecuador) in order to fund research grants on páramo ecology and conservation.
