@inproceedings{fdi:010072106, title = {{T}he contribution of small scale fishing constraints on {S}ardinella landings in {S}enegalese waters [r{\'e}sum{\'e}]}, author = {{D}iankha, {O}. and {D}emarcq, {H}erv{\'e} and {F}all, {M}. and {T}hiao, {D}. and {T}hiaw, {M}. and {S}ow, {B}.{A}. and {G}aye, {A}.{T}. and {B}rehmer, {P}atrice}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}ver the last decades, small pelagic fisheries have shown an increasing development in {S}enegal, especially those targeting {S}ardinella aurita and {S}. maderensis. {T}heir landing and fishing effort quickly increase for both species, from less than 100,000 tons with 35,035 trips in the early 80's to a peak of over 400,000 tons with 86,427 trips in 2008. {T}he {S}enegalese small scale pelagic fisheries, targeting both species, accounts for more than 86% of the artisanal fishery landing in biomass. {W}e investigated the effects of small scale fishing over ten years (2004-2013) with generalized additive model fitting techniques using landings vs. fishing effort per gear and type of fishing gears in the {N}orthern and southern parts of {S}enegal. {T}he study revealed that these effects are more pronounced in the {N}orthern area for {S}. aurita while they are more significant in the {S}outhern area for {S}. maderensis. {T}he purse seine, i.e the main {S}enegalese fishing gear targeting {S}ardinella, provides the most significant effects on {S}. aurita landings in both areas, while for {S}. maderensis, the most significant effects are shared between two fishing gears: purse seine in the {N}orthern area and encircling gill nets in the {S}outhern area. {S}patio-temporal patterns of the effects of small scale fishing are described and the relative importance of fishing effort and fishing gear on both species at seasonal and inter-annual scales are discussed.}, keywords = {{SENEGAL} ; {ATLANTIQUE}}, numero = {}, pages = {33}, booktitle = {{I}nternational conference {ICAWA} 2016 : extended book of abstract : the {AWA} project : ecosystem approach to the management of fisheries and the marine environment in {W}est {A}frican waters}, year = {2017}, ISBN = {978-2-9553602-0-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072106}, }
