@article{fdi:010072052, title = {{H}igh endemism and stem density distinguish {N}ew {C}aledonian from other high-diversity rainforests in the {S}outhwest {P}acific}, author = {{I}banez, {T}. and {B}lanchard, {E}. and {H}equet, {V}anessa and {K}eppel, {G}. and {L}aidlaw, {M}. and {P}outeau, {R}obin and {V}androt, {H}. and {B}irnbaum, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground and {A}ims {T}he biodiversity hotspot of {N}ew {C}aledonia is globally renowned for the diversity and endemism of its flora. {N}ew {C}aledonia's tropical rainforests have been reported to have higher stem densities, higher concentrations of relictual lineages and higher endemism than other rainforests. {T}his study investigates whether these aspects differ in {N}ew {C}aledonian rainforests compared to other high-diversity rainforests in the {S}outhwest {P}acific. {M}ethods {P}lants (with a diameter at breast height >= 10 cm) were surveyed in nine 1-ha rainforest plots across the main island of {N}ew {C}aledonia and compared with 14 1-ha plots in high-diversity rainforests of the {S}outhwest {P}acific (in {A}ustralia, {F}iji, {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea and the {S}olomon {I}slands). {T}his facilitated a comparison of stem densities, taxonomic composition and diversity, and species turnover among plots and countries. {K}ey {R}esults {T}he study inventoried 11 280 stems belonging to 335 species (93 species ha(-1) on average) in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {I}n comparison with other rainforests in the {S}outhwest {P}acific, {N}ew {C}aledonian rainforests exhibited higher stem density (1253 stems ha(-1) on average) including abundant palms and tree ferns, with the high abundance of the latter being unparalleled outside {N}ew {C}aledonia. {I}n all plots, the density of relictual species was >= 10 % for both stems and species, with no discernible differences among countries. {S}pecies endemism, reaching 89 % on average, was significantly higher in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {O}verall, species turnover increased with geographical distance, but not among {N}ew {C}aledonian plots. {C}onclusions {H}igh stem density, high endemism and a high abundance of tree ferns with stem diameters >= 10 cm are therefore unique characteristics of {N}ew {C}aledonian rainforests. {H}igh endemism and high spatial species turnover imply that the current system consisting of a few protected areas is inadequate, and that the spatial distribution of plant species needs to be considered to adequately protect the exceptional flora of {N}ew {C}aledonian rainforests.}, keywords = {{E}ndemism hotspot ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; island ; {O}ceania ; {P}acific rainforests ; palms ; plot network ; relictual lineages ; species richness ; trees ; tree ; ferns ; tropical forest ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE} ; {PACIFIQUE} {SUD} {OUEST}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}nnals of {B}otany}, volume = {121}, numero = {1}, pages = {25--35}, ISSN = {0305-7364}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1093/aob/mcx107}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072052}, }
