@article{fdi:010072047, title = {{P}ermian-{T}riassic {T}ethyan realm reorganization : implications for the outward {P}angea margin}, author = {{R}iel, {N}. and {J}aillard, {E}tienne and {M}artelat, {J}. {E}. and {G}uillot, {S}. and {B}raun, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e present a new conceptual model to explain the first order {P}ermian-{T}riassic evolution of the whole > 30 000 km long {P}angea margin facing the {P}anthalassa ocean. {C}ompilation of available geological, geochemical, geochronogical and paleomagnetic data all along this system allowed us to distinguish three part of the margin: western {L}aurentia, western {G}ondwana and eastern {G}ondwana. {T}hese segments record distinct tectonic and magmatic events, which all occur synchronously along the whole margin and correlate well with the main geodynamic events of this period, i.e. subduction of the {P}aleotethys mid-ocean ridge at 310-280 {M}a, opening of the {N}eotethys at 280-260 {M}a, counterclockwise rotation of {P}angea at 260-230 {M}a and closure of the {P}aleotethys at 230-220 {M}a. {B}etween 260 and 230 {M}a, the reorganization of the {T}ethyan realm triggered the up to 35 rotation of {P}angea around an {E}uler pole located in northernmost {S}outh {A}merica. {T}his implied both an increase and a decrease of the convergence rate between the margin and the {P}anthalassa ocean, north and south of the {E}uler pole, respectively. {T}hus, the {P}ermian-{T}riassic {P}angean margin was marked: in western {L}aurentia by marginal sea closure, in western {G}ondwana by widespread bimodal magmatic and volcanic activity, in eastern {G}ondwana by transpressive orogenic phase. {T}herefore, we propose that the {P}ermian-{T}riassic evolution of the outward margin of {P}angea was controlled by the {T}ethyan realm reorganization.}, keywords = {{TETHYS} ; {PANGEE} ; {LAURENTIA} ; {GONDWANA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {81}, numero = {}, pages = {78--86}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2017.11.007}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010072047}, }
