  abstract = {{B}ackground: {J}apanese encephalitis virus ({JEV}) is a leading identified cause of encephalitis in {A}sia, often occurring in rural areas with poor access to laboratory diagnostics. {W}e evaluated two rapid diagnostic tests ({RDT}s) for anti-{JEV} immunoglobulin {M} ({I}g{M}) detection. {M}ethods: {C}onsecutive cerebrospinal fluid and serum from 388 patients (704 samples) with suspected {JEV} infections admitted to six hospitals in {L}aos were tested with one of two {SD}-{B}ioline anti-{JEV} {I}g{M} {RDT}s and the {W}orld {H}ealth {O}rganization standard anti-{JEV} {I}g{M} enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ({ELISA}; {P}anbio {J}apanese {E}ncephalitis-{D}engue {I}g{M} {C}ombo {ELISA}. {R}esults and {C}onclusions: {T}he performance of both {RDT}s showed strikingly low sensitivity in comparison to anti-{JEV} {I}g{M} antibody capture {ELISA} (2.1-51.4%), suggesting low sensitivity of the {RDT}s. {W}e highlight the fundamental prerequisite to validate {RDT}s prior to use to ensure that they meet standards for testing.},
