  abstract = {{S}permacoce alata {A}ubl. and {S}permacoce latifolia {A}ubl., frequently referred to as {B}orreria alata ({A}ubl.) {DC}. and {B}orreria latifolia ({A}ubl.) {K}. {S}chum., were described in the 18th century by {J}ean {B}aptiste {C}hristophe {F}usee {A}ublet from {F}rench {G}uiana. {T}hey have sometimes been treated as a single species but are two easily distinguished species. {S}permacoce alata occurs from {V}enezuela through the {G}uianas and in the eastern {A}mazon basin north of the {R}io {A}mazonas and is not weedy. {T}he {N}ew {W}orld distribution of {S}. latifolia is from southern {M}exico through {C}entral {A}merica and throughout eastern {S}outh {A}merica to {B}olivia and {P}araguay, and it is naturalized in the tropical and subtropical regions of the {O}ld {W}orld. {S}permacoce latifolia is a noxious weed that has frequently been misidentified as {S}. alata. {T}he first documented reports of {S}. latifolia in {F}lorida are presented. {G}iven its aggressive colonization elsewhere, prompt consideration should be given to controlling the spread of {S}. latifolia in the southern {USA}.},
