@article{fdi:010071900, title = {{C}oastal upwelling south of {M}adagascar : temporal and spatial variability}, author = {{R}amanantsoa, {J}. {D}. and {K}rug, {M}. and {P}enven, {P}ierrick and {R}ouault, {M}. and {G}ula, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}adagascar's southern coastal marine zone is a region of high biological productivity which supports a wide range of marine ecosystems, including fisheries. {T}his high biological productivity is attributed to coastal up-welling. {T}his paper provides new insights on the structure, variability and drivers of the coastal upwelling south of {M}adagascar. {S}atellite remote sensing is used to characterize the spatial extent and strength of the coastal upwelling. {A} front detection algorithm is applied to thirteen years of {M}ulti-scale {U}ltra-high {R}esolution ({MUR}) {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperatures ({SST}) and an upwelling index is calculated. {T}he influence of winds and ocean currents as drivers of the upwelling is investigated using satellite, in-situ observations, and a numerical model. {R}esults reveal the presence of two well-defined upwelling cells. {T}he first cell ({C}ore 1) is located in the southeastern corner of {M}adagascar, and the second cell ({C}ore 2) is west of the southern tip of {M}adagascar. {T}hese two cores are characterized by different seasonal variability, different intensities, different upwelled water mass origins, and distinct forcing mechanisms. {C}ore 1 is associated with a dynamical upwelling forced by the detachment of the {E}ast {M}adagascar {C}urrent ({EMC}), which is reinforced by upwelling favourable winds. {C}ore 2 appears to be primarily forced by upwelling favourable winds, but is also influenced by a poleward eastern boundary flow coming from the {M}ozambique {C}hannel. {T}he intrusion of {M}ozambique {C}hannel warm waters could result in an asynchronicity in seasonality between upwelling surface signature and upwelling favourables winds.}, keywords = {{C}oastal upwelling ; {S}outh of {M}adagascar ; {E}kman transport ; {E}ast {M}adagascar ; {C}tirrent ; {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature ; {N}umerical model ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}arine {S}ystems}, volume = {178}, numero = {}, pages = {29--37}, ISSN = {0924-7963}, year = {2018}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jmarsys.2017.10.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071900}, }
