@article{fdi:010071386, title = {{D}iversity of two widespread {I}ndo-{P}acific demosponge species revisited}, author = {{E}rpenbeck, {D}. and {A}ryasari, {R}. and {B}enning, {S}. and {D}ebitus, {C}{\'e}cile and {K}altenbacher, {E}. and {A}l-{A}idaroos, {A}. {M}. and {S}chupp, {P}. and {H}all, {K}. and {H}ooper, {J}. {N}. {A}. and {V}oigt, {O}. and de {V}oogd, {N}. {J}. and {W}orheide, {G}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {I}ndo-{P}acific is the world's largest marine biogeographic region, covering the tropical and subtropical waters from the {R}ed {S}ea in the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean to the {E}aster {I}slands in the {P}acific. {I}t is characterized by a vast degree of biogeographic connectivity in particular in its marine realm. {S}o far, usage of molecular tools rejected the presence of cosmopolitan or very widespread sponge species in several cases, supporting hypotheses on a higher level of endemism among marine invertebrates than previously thought. {W}e analysed the genetic diversity of {H}yrtios erectus and {S}tylissa massa, two alleged widespread sponge species of the {I}ndo-{P}acific, from the {R}ed {S}ea and {M}ayotte in the {W}est {I}ndian {O}cean to {P}olynesia in the {C}entral {P}acific. {I}n the region of its type locality, the {R}ed {S}ea, {H}yrtios erectus is genetically distinct, and the populations from the remaining {I}ndo-{P}acific are a potentially different species and paraphyletic in respect to {H}. altus. {S}tylissa massa falls into different, but widespread genetic clades, one of them ({S}tylissa cf. massa), with distinct potentially hairpin-forming elements in mitochondrial intergenic regions. {T}he results also indicate that morphologically established demosponge species in the {I}ndo-{P}acific can be widespread, but simultaneously harbour cryptic, genetically distinct lineages.}, keywords = {{D}emosponges ; {S}tylissa massa ; {H}yrtios erectus ; {P}orifera ; {I}ndo-{P}acific ; {R}ed {S}ea ; {C}ryptic species ; {PACIFIQUE} ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {MER} {ROUGE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {B}iodiversity}, volume = {47}, numero = {4}, pages = {1035--1043}, ISSN = {1867-1616}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1007/s12526-017-0783-3}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071386}, }
