@article{fdi:010071377, title = {{C}ontrasted surface mass balances of debris-free glaciers observed between the southern and the inner parts of the {E}verest region (2007-15)}, author = {{S}herpa, {S}. {F}. and {W}agnon, {P}atrick and {B}run, {F}. and {B}erthier, {E}. and {V}incent, {C}. and {L}ejeune, {Y}. and {A}rnaud, {Y}ves and {K}ayastha, {R}. {B}. and {S}inisalo, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}hree debris-free glaciers with strongly differing annual glaciological glacier-wide mass balances ({MB}s) are monitored in the {E}verest region (central {H}imalaya, {N}epal). {T}he mass budget of {M}era {G}lacier (5.1 km(2) in 2012), located in the southern part of this region, was balanced during 2007-15, whereas {P}okalde (0.1 km(2) in 2011) and {W}est {C}hangri {N}up glaciers (0.9 km(2) in 2013), similar to 30 km further north, have been losing mass rapidly with annual glacier-wide {MB}s of -0.69 +/- 0.28 m w.e. a(-1) (2009-15) and -1.24 +/- 0.27 m w.e. a(-1) (2010-15), respectively. {A}n analysis of high-elevation meteorological variables reveals that these glaciers are sensitive to precipitation, and to occasional severe cyclonic storms originating from the {B}ay of {B}engal. {W}e observe a negative horizontal gradient of annual precipitation in south-to-north direction across the range (<= -21 mm km(-1), i.e. -2% km(-1)). {T}his contrasted mass-balance pattern over rather short distances is related (i) to the low maximum elevation of {P}okalde and {W}est {C}hangri {N}up glaciers, resulting in years where their accumulation area ratio is reduced to zero and (ii) to a steeper vertical gradient of {MB} for glaciers located in the inner arid part of the range.}, keywords = {glacier mass balance ; glacier monitoring ; mountain glaciers ; {NEPAL} ; {HIMALAYA} ; {EVEREST} ; {MERA} {GLACIER} ; {CHAGRI} {NUP} {GLACIER} ; {POKALDE} {GLACIER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}laciology}, volume = {63}, numero = {240}, pages = {637--651}, ISSN = {0022-1430}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1017/jog.2017.30}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071377}, }
