@article{fdi:010071329, title = {{I}nfluence of {ENSO} on the {P}acific decadal oscillation in {CMIP} models}, author = {{N}idheesh, {A}. {G}. and {L}engaigne, {M}atthieu and {V}ialard, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {I}zumo, {T}akeshi and {U}nnikrishnan, {A}. {S}. and {C}assou, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{E}merging decadal climate predictions call for an assessment of decadal climate variability in the {C}oupled {M}odel {I}ntercomparison {P}roject ({CMIP}) database. {I}n this paper, we evaluate the influence of {E}l {N}io {S}outhern {O}scillation ({ENSO}) on {P}acific {D}ecadal {O}scillation ({PDO}) in 10 control simulations from the {CMIP}3 and 22 from the {CMIP}5 database. {A}ll models overestimate the time lag between {ENSO} forcing and the {PDO} response. {W}hile half of the models exhibit {ENSO}-{PDO} correlation which is close to that in observation (> 0.5) when the time lag is accounted for, the rest of the models underestimate this relationship. {M}odels with stronger {ENSO}-{PDO} correlation tend to exhibit larger {PDO}-related signals in the equatorial and south {P}acific, highlighting the key role of {ENSO} teleconnection in setting the inter-hemispheric {P}acific pattern of the {PDO}. {T}he strength of the {ENSO}-{PDO} relationship is related to both {ENSO} amplitude and strength of {ENSO} teleconnection to the {N}orth {P}acific sea-level pressure variability in the {A}leutian {L}ow region. {T}he shape of the {PDO} spectrum is consistent with that predicted from a combination of direct {ENSO} forcing, atmospheric stochastic forcing over the {N}orth {P}acific and the re-emergence process in 27 models out of 32. {G}iven the essential role of {ENSO} in shaping the {P}acific decadal variability, models displaying realistic {ENSO} amplitude and teleconnections should be preferentially used to perform decadal prediction experiments.}, keywords = {{ENSO} ; {PDO} ; {D}ecadal variability ; {C}limate ; {CMIP} ; {PACIFIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {49}, numero = {9-10}, pages = {3309--3326}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-016-3514-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071329}, }
