@inproceedings{fdi:010071197, title = {{S}ahel rainfall negatively linked to global temperature during the past 1600 years [r{\'e}sum{\'e} de poster]}, author = {{C}arr{\'e}, {M}. and {A}zzoug, {M}. and {C}amara, {A}. and {C}heddadi, {R}. and {G}aye, {A}. and {J}anicot, {S}erge and {K}hodri, {M}yriam and {L}azar, {A}lban and {L}azareth, {C}laire and {M}ignot, {J}uliette and {W}ade, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}s climate model uncertainties remain very large for future rainfall in the {S}ahel, a multi-centennial perspective is required to assess the relationship between global warming and the {S}ahel hydroclimate. {W}e present here a new record of hydrologic conditions over the past 1600 years in {S}enegal, obtained from stable oxygen isotope analyses (δ18{O}) in archaeological shell middens in the {S}aloum {D}elta. {D}uring the preindustrial period, the {S}ahel was relatively humid, particularly from {AD} 1500 to {AD} 1800, during the coolest period of the last two millennia, referred to as the {L}ittle {I}ce {A}ge. {A} strong negative link is observed at the centennial scale between global temperature and humidity in the {S}ahel, in direct contrast with the relationship observed elsewhere in the northern tropics, which shows that the processes linking the {I}ntertropical {C}onvergence {Z}one ({ITCZ}) and the {W}est {A}frican {M}onsoon ({WAM}) are more complex than previously thought. {T}he relationships between changes in the annual mean state and seasonal to interannual variability are explored using monthly resolved shell isotope records. {I}n the context of the past 1600 years, the {W}estern {S}ahel appears to be experiencing unprecedented drought conditions, resulting from a rapid aridification since {AD} 1800 that points to local and global anthropogenic forcings. {T}his new long-term perspective suggests that under future global warming the potential for severe {S}ahel droughts may increase significantly.}, keywords = {{SAHEL} ; {ZONE} {SAHELIENNE}}, numero = {}, pages = {195}, booktitle = {{PAGES} {Z}aragoza 2017 : global challenges for our common future : a paleoscience perspective : abstract book}, year = {2017}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071197}, }
