@article{fdi:010071058, title = {{D}etection of bacterial pathogens including potential new species in human head lice from {M}ali}, author = {{A}manzougaghene, {N}. and {F}enollar, {F}. and {S}angare, {A}. {K}. and {S}issoko, {M}. {S}. and {D}oumbo, {O}. {K}. and {R}aoult, {D}. and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n poor {A}frican countries, where no medical and biological facilities are available, the identification of potential emerging pathogens of concern at an early stage is challenging. {H}ead lice, {P}ediculus humanus capitis, have a short life, feed only on human blood and do not transmit pathogens to their progeny. {T}hey are, therefore, a perfect tool for the xenodiagnosis of current or recent human infection. {T}his study assessed the occurrence of bacterial pathogens from head lice collected in two rural villages from {M}ali, where a high frequency of head lice infestation had previously been reported, using molecular methods. {R}esults show that all 600 head lice, collected from 117 individuals, belonged to clade {E}, specific to {W}est {A}frica. {B}artonella quintana, the causative agent of trench fever, was identified in three of the 600 (0.5%) head lice studied. {O}ur study also shows, for the first time, the presence of the {DNA} of two pathogenic bacteria, namely {C}oxiella burnetii (5.1%) and {R}ickettsia aeschlimannii (0.6%), detected in human head lice, as well as the {DNA} of potential new species from the {A}naplasma and {E}hrlichia genera of unknown pathogenicity. {T}he finding of several {M}alian head lice infected with {B}. quintana, {C}. burnetii, {R}. aeschlimannii, {A}naplasma and {E}hrlichia is alarming and highlights the need for active survey programs to define the public health consequences of the detection of these emerging bacterial pathogens in human head lice.}, keywords = {{MALI}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{PLOS} {O}ne}, volume = {12}, numero = {9}, pages = {e0184621 [18 p.]}, ISSN = {1932-6203}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1371/journal.pone.0184621}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010071058}, }
