@article{fdi:010070391, title = {{H}igh {T}riatoma brasiliensis densities and {T}rypanosoma cruzi prevalence in domestic and peridomestic habitats in the state of {R}io {G}rande do {N}orte, {B}razil : the source for chagas disease outbreaks ?}, author = {{L}ilioso, {M}. and {F}olly-{R}amos, {E}. and {R}ocha, {F}. {L}. and {R}abinovich, {J}. and {C}apdevielle {D}ulac, {C}laire and {H}arry, {M}. and {M}arcet, {P}. {L}. and {C}osta, {J}. and {A}lmeida, {C}. {E}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} total of 2,431 {T}riatoma brasiliensis were collected from 39 populations of {P}araiba ({PB}) and {R}io {G}rande do {N}orte ({RN}) states, {B}razil. {I}n {PB}, {T}rypanosoma cruzi infection was not detected in either peridomestic or domestic vector populations. {I}n contrast, in {RN}, {T}. brasiliensis was detected with high parasite prevalence in these ecotopes (30.7-40.0%). {M}oreover, peridomicile insect population densities were more than double the average densities of all other settings evaluated (19.17 versus < 8.94 triatomine/man-hour). {G}enotyped parasites evidenced a mix of {T}. cruzi lineages circulating in both peridomestic and sylvatic populations. {A}lthough vector control efforts have dramatically decreased {C}hagas disease transmission to humans, recent outbreaks have been detected in four municipalities of {RN} state. {O}ur results clearly evidence a worrisome proximity between infected vectors and humans in {RN}. {I}ndeed, finding of infected {T}. brasiliensis inside homes is routinely recorded by local vector control surveillance staff around the outbreak area, challenging the current and conventional view that vector transmissions are controlled in northeastern {B}razil. {T}his scenario calls for strengthening vector control surveillance and interventions to prevent further {C}hagas transmission, especially in {RN} {S}tate.}, keywords = {{BRESIL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {96}, numero = {6}, pages = {1456--1459}, ISSN = {0002-9637}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.16-0823}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070391}, }
