@article{fdi:010070328, title = {{T}otal organic carbon fluxes of the {R}ed {R}iver system ({V}ietnam)}, author = {{T}hi {P}huong {Q}uynh {L}e, and {V}iet {N}ga {D}ao, and {R}ochelle {N}ewall, {E}mma and {G}arnier, {J}. and {X}i{X}i {L}u, and {B}illen, {G}. and {T}hi {T}huy {D}uong, and {C}uong {T}u {H}o, and {E}tcheber, {H}. and {T}hi {M}ai {H}uong {N}guyen, and {T}hi {B}ich {N}goc {N}guyen, and {B}ich {T}huy {N}guyen, and {N}hu {D}a {L}e, and {Q}uoc {L}ong {P}ham,}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}iverine transport of organic carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the oceans plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. {T}he {R}ed {R}iver is located in {S}outheast {A}sia where river discharge, sediment loads and fluxes of elements (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) associated with suspended solids have been dramatically altered over past decades as a result of reservoir impoundment and land use, population, and climate change. {D}issolved organic carbon ({DOC}) and particulate organic carbon ({POC}) concentrations were measured monthly at four stations of the {R}ed {R}iver system from {J}anuary 2008 to {D}ecember 2010. {T}he results reveal that {POC} changed synchronically with total suspended solids ({TSS}) concentration and with the river discharge, whereas no clear trend was observed for {DOC} concentration. {T}he mean value of total organic carbon ({TOC} = {DOC} + {POC}) flux in the delta of the {R}ed {R}iver was 31.5 x 10(13) +/- 4.0 x 10(13) {M}g{C}.yr (1) (range 27.9-35.8 x 10(13) {M}g{C}.yr (1) which leads to a specific {TOC} flux of 2012 +/- 255 kg{C}.km(-2).yr(-1) during this 2008-2010 period. {A}bout 80% of the {TOC} flux was transferred to the estuary during the rainy season as a consequence of the higher river water discharge. {T}he high mean value of the {POC}:{C}hl-a ratio (1585 +/- 870 mg{C}.mg{C}hl-a(-1)) and the moderate {C}:{N} ratio (7.3 +/- 0.1) in the water column system suggest that organic carbon in the {R}ed {R}iver system is mainly derived from erosion and soil leaching in the basin. {T}he effect of two new dam impoundments in the {R}ed {R}iver was also observable with lower {TOC} fluxes in 2010 compared with 2008.}, keywords = {dissolved organic carbon ; particulate organic carbon ; soil erosion ; human impacts ; {R}ed {R}iver ; {VIET} {NAM} ; {FLEUVE} {ROUGE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}arth {S}urface {P}rocesses and {L}andforms}, volume = {42}, numero = {9}, pages = {1329--1341}, ISSN = {0197-9337}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1002/esp.4107}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070328}, }
