@article{fdi:010070320, title = {{G}round deformation before the 2015 eruptions of {C}otopaxi volcano detected by {I}n{SAR}}, author = {{M}orales {R}ivera, {A}. {M}. and {A}melung, {F}. and {M}othes, {P}. and {H}ong, {S}. {H}. and {N}ocquet, {J}ean-{M}athieu and {J}arrin, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}otopaxi volcano started a period of volcanic unrest in {A}pril 2015 that led to a series of eruptions between {A}ugust and {N}ovember 2015. {W}e use {COSMO}-{S}ky{M}ed {I}nterferometric {S}ynthetic {A}perture {R}adar supported by continuous {GPS} observations spanning the period of 2014-2016 to obtain time-dependent ground deformation data over {C}otopaxi volcano related to the period of unrest and onset of eruptions. {W}e find evidence of precursory deformation, with a maximum uplift on the western flank of 3.4 cm from {A}pril to {A}ugust 2015. {D}eformation is explained by an inclined sheet intrusion located a few km southwest of the summit with an opening volume of 6.8 x 10(6)m(3), extending from a depth of 12.1 km and shallowing to 5.5 km below the summit, that contributed to internal edifice growth. {T}he temporal coincidence of deformation prior to the eruptions potentially suggests that short-term eruptions at {C}otopaxi are partly controlled by episodic edifice growth.}, keywords = {{EQUATEUR} ; {COTOPAXI} {VOLCAN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}eophysical {R}esearch {L}etters}, volume = {44}, numero = {art. 13 [9 p.]}, pages = {6607--6615}, ISSN = {0094-8276}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1002/2017gl073720}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070320}, }
