@article{fdi:010070265, title = {{M}olecular phylogeny of 42 species of {C}ulicoides ({D}iptera, {C}eratopogonidae) from three continents}, author = {{A}ugot, {D}. and {M}athieu, {B}. and {H}adj-{H}enni, {L}. and {B}arriel, {V}. and {M}ena, {S}. {Z}. and {S}molis, {S}. and {S}lama, {D}. and {R}andrianambinintsoa, {F}. {J}. and {T}rueba, {G}. and {K}altenbach, {M}. and {R}ahola, {N}il and {D}epaquit, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he genus {C}ulicoides includes vectors of important animal diseases such as bluetongue and {S}chmallenberg virus ({BTV} and {SBV}). {T}his genus includes 1300 species classified in 32 subgenera and 38 unclassified species. {H}owever, the phylogenetic relationships between different subgenera of {C}ulicoides have never been studied. {P}hylogenetic analyses of 42 species belonging to 12 subgenera and 8 ungrouped species of genus {C}ulicoides from {E}cuador, {F}rance, {G}abon, {M}adagascar and {T}unisia were carried out using two molecular markers (28{S} r{DNA} {D}1 and {D}2 domains and {COI} mt{DNA}). {S}equences were subjected to non-probabilistic (maximum parsimony) and probabilistic ({B}ayesian inference ({BI})) approaches. {T}he subgenera {M}onoculicoides, {C}ulicoides, {H}aematomyidium, {H}offmania, {R}emmia and {A}varitia (including the main vectors of bluetongue disease) were monophyletic, whereas the subgenus {O}ecacta was paraphyletic. {O}ur study validates the subgenus {R}emmia (= {S}chultzei group) as a valid subgenus, outside of the subgenus {O}ecacta. {I}n {E}urope, {C}ulicoides obsoletus, {C}ulicoides scoticus and {C}ulicoides chiopterus should be part of the {O}bsoletus complex whereas {C}ulicoides dewulfi should be excluded from this complex. {O}ur study suggests that the current {C}ulicoides classification needs to be revisited with modern tools.}, keywords = {{C}ulicoides spp. ; {P}hylogeny ; {E}cuador ; {F}rance ; {G}abon ; {M}adagascar ; {T}unisia ; 28{S} ; {COI} ; {EQUATEUR} ; {FRANCE} ; {GABON} ; {MADAGASCAR} ; {TUNISIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}arasite}, volume = {24}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 23 [ p.]}, ISSN = {1252-607{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1051/parasite/2017020}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070265}, }
