@article{fdi:010070234, title = {{V}ariability of {CO}2 fugacity at the western edge of the tropical {A}tlantic {O}cean from the 8 degrees {N} to 38 degrees {W} {PIRATA} buoy}, author = {{B}ruto, {L}. and {A}raujo, {M}. and {N}oriega, {C}. and {V}eleda, {D}. and {L}ef{\`e}vre, {N}athalie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}ourly data of {CO}2 fugacity (f{CO}(2)) at 8 degrees {N}-38 degrees {W} were analyzed from 2008 to 2011. {A}nalyses of wind, rainfall, temperature and salinity data from the buoy indicated two distinct seasonal periods. {T}he first period ({J}anuary to {J}uly) had a mean f{CO}(2) of 378.9 mu atm (n=7512). {D}uring this period, in which the study area was characterized by small salinity variations, the f{CO}(2) is mainly controlled by sea surface temperature ({SST}) variations (f{CO}(2) =24.4*{SST}-281.1, r(2)=0.8). {D}uring the second period ({A}ugust {D}ecember), the mean f{CO}(2) was 421.9 atm (n = 11571). {D}uring these months, the region is subjected to the simultaneous action of (a) rainfall induced by the presence of the {I}ntertropical {C}onvergence {Z}one ({ITCZ}); (b) arrival of fresh water from the {A}mazon {R}iver plume that is transported to the east by the {N}orth {E}quatorial {C}ountercurrent ({NECC}) after the retroflection of the {N}orth {B}razil {C}urrent ({NBC}); and (c) vertical input of {CO}2-rich water due to {E}kman pumping. {T}he data indicated the existence of high-frequency f{CO}(2) variability (periods less than 24 h). {T}his high variability is related to two different mechanisms. {I}n the first mechanism, f{CO}(2) increases are associated to rapid increases in {SST} and are attributed to the diurnal cycle of solar radiation. {I}n addition, low wind speed contributes to {SST} rising by inhibiting vertical mixing. {I}n the second mechanism, f{CO}(2) decreases are associated to {SSS} decreases caused by heavy rainfall.}, keywords = {{C}arbon dioxide ; {S}easonal variations ; {H}igh-frequency ; {T}ropical {A}tlantic ; {PIRATA} ; {ATLANTIQUE} ; {ZONE} {TROPICALE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{D}ynamics of {A}tmospheres and {O}ceans}, volume = {78}, numero = {}, pages = {1--13}, ISSN = {0377-0265}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1016/j.dynatmoce.2017.01.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070234}, }
