@article{fdi:010070097, title = {{A}n operon for production of bioactive gibberellin {A}(4) phytohormone with wide distribution in the bacterial rice leaf streak pathogen {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola}, author = {{N}agel, {R}. and {T}urrini, {P}. {C}. {G}. and {N}ett, {R}. {S}. and {L}each, {J}. {E}. and {V}erdier, {V}al{\'e}rie and {V}an {S}luys, {M}. {A}. and {P}eters, {R}. {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}hytopathogens have developed elaborate mechanisms to attenuate the defense response of their host plants, including convergent evolution of complex pathways for production of the {GA} phytohormones, which were actually first isolated from the rice fungal pathogen {G}ibberella fujikuroi. {T}he rice bacterial pathogen {X}anthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola ({X}oc) has been demonstrated to contain a biosynthetic operon with cyclases capable of producing the universal {GA} precursor ent-kaurene. {G}enetic (knock-out) studies indicate that the derived diterpenoid serves as a virulence factor for this rice leaf streak pathogen, serving to reduce the jasmonic acid-mediated defense response. {H}ere the functions of the remaining genes in the {X}oc operon are elucidated and the distribution of the operon in {X}. oryzae is investigated in over 100 isolates. {T}he {X}oc operon leads to production of the bioactive {GA}(4), an additional step beyond production of the penultimate precursor {GA}(9) mediated by the homologous operons recently characterized from rhizobia. {M}oreover, this {GA} biosynthetic operon was found to be widespread in {X}oc (> 90%), but absent in the other major {X}. oryzae pathovar. {T}hese results indicate selective pressure for production of {GA}(4) in the distinct lifestyle of {X}oc, and the importance of {GA} to both fungal and bacterial pathogens of rice.}, keywords = {biogeographical distribution ; cytochromes {P}450 ; gibberellin ; biosynthesis ; plant-microbe interactions ; virulence factor}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{N}ew {P}hytologist}, volume = {214}, numero = {3}, pages = {1260--1266}, ISSN = {0028-646{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1111/nph.14441}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070097}, }
