@article{fdi:010070052, title = {{I}dentification of atypical {E}l {T}or {V}-cholerae {O}1 {O}gawa hosting {SXT} element in {S}enegal, {A}frica}, author = {{S}ambe-{B}a, {B}. and {D}iallo, {M}. {H}. and {S}eck, {A}. and {W}ane, {A}. {A}. and {C}onstantin de {M}agny, {G}uillaume and {B}oye, {C}. {S}. {B}. and {S}ow, {A}. {I}. and {G}assama-{S}ow, {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}ibrio cholerae {O}1 is the causative agent of cholera with classical and {E}l {T}or, two well-established biotypes. {I}n last 20 years, hybrid strains of classical and {E}l {T}or and variant {E}l {T}or which carry classical ctx{B} have emerged worldwide. {I}n 2004-2005, {S}enegal experienced major cholera epidemic with a number of cases totalling more than 31719 with approximately 458 fatal outcomes ({CFR}, 1.44%). {I}n this retrospective study, fifty isolates out of a total of 403 {V}. cholerae biotype {E}l {T}or serovar {O}gawa isolates from all areas in {S}enegal during the 2004-2005 cholera outbreak were randomly selected. {I}solates were characterized using phenotypic and genotypic methods. {T}he analysis of antibiotic resistance patterns revealed the predominance of the {S}-{S}u-{TCY}-{T}su phenotype (90% of isolates). {T}he molecular characterization of antibiotic resistance revealed the presence of the {SXT} element, a self-transmissible chromosomally integrating element in all isolates. {M}ost of {V}. cholerae isolates had an intact virulence cassette (86%) (ctx, zot, ace genes). {A}ll isolates tested gave amplification with primers for classical {CT}, and 10/50 (20%) of isolates carried classical and {E}l {T}or ctx{B}. {T}he study reveals the presence of atypical {V}. cholerae {O}1 {E}l {T}or during cholera outbreak in {S}enegal in 2004-2005.}, keywords = {{V}ibrio cholerae ; {O}1 virulence ; antibioresistance ; {SXT} element ; {S}enegal ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {M}icrobiology}, volume = {8}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 748 [7 p.]}, ISSN = {1664-302{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.3389/fmicb.2017.00748}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070052}, }
