@article{fdi:010070037, title = {{A}n alternative strategy of preventive control of tick-borne relapsing fever in rural areas of {S}ine-{S}aloum, {S}enegal}, author = {{D}iatta, {G}. and {M}ediannikov, {O}leg and {B}oyer, {S}. and {S}okhna, {C}heikh and {B}assin, {H}. and {F}enollar, {F}. and {C}hauvancy, {G}illes and {N}diaye, {A}. {A}. and {D}iene, {F}. and {P}arola, {P}. and {R}aoult, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n {S}enegal, tick-borne relapsing fever ({TBRF}) is a major cause of morbidity and a neglected public health problem. {B}orreliosis cases commonly detected in two villages led us to implement a borreliosis preventive control including cementing of floors in bedrooms and outbuildings attended by inhabitants to avoid human contacts with tick vectors. {E}pidemiological and medical monitoring of the {TBRF} incidence was carried out at {D}ielmo and {N}diop by testing the blood of febrile patients since 1990 and 1993, respectively. {I}ntra-domiciliary habitat conditions were improved by cementing, coupled with accompanying measures, from {M}arch 2013 to {S}eptember 2015. {A}pplication of this strategy was associated with a significant reduction of borreliosis incidence. {T}his was more evident in {D}ielmo, dropping from 10.55 to 2.63 cases per 100 person-years ({P} < 0.001), than in {N}diop where it changed from 3.79 to 1.39 cases per 100 person-years ({P} < 0.001). {T}hirty-six cases of {TBRF} were estimated to be prevented at a cost of (sic)526 per infection. {T}he preventive control strategy was successful in {D}ielmo and {N}diop, being associated with decreased incidence by 89.8% and 81.5%, respectively, suggesting that {TBRF} may be widely decreased when the population is involved. {P}ublic health authorities or any development stakeholders should adopt this effective tool for promoting rural health through national prevention programs.}, keywords = {{SENEGAL} ; {SINE} {SALOUM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {95}, numero = {3}, pages = {537--545}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.15-0776}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070037}, }
