@article{fdi:010070006, title = {{S}pecies-specific associations between soil-transmitted helminths and micronutrients in {V}ietnamese schoolchildren}, author = {de {G}ier, {B}. and {N}ga, {T}. {T}. and {W}inichagoon, {P}. and {D}ijkhuizen, {M}. {A}. and {K}han, {N}. {C}. and van de {B}or, {M}. and {P}once, {M}. {C}. and {P}olman, {K}. and {W}ieringa, {F}ranck}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oil-transmitted helminth ({STH}) infections and micronutrient deficiencies are closely related and often coexist among low-income populations. {W}e studied the association between infections with specific {STH} species and micronutrient status in rural {V}ietnamese schoolchildren. {C}hildren ({N} = 510) aged 6-9 years were recruited from two primary schools. {STH} infections were determined in stool samples. {H}emoglobin, ferritin, retinol, and zinc were measured in blood samples, as well as {C}-reactive protein to control for inflammation. {I}odine excretion was measured in urine. {A}ssociations of single and multiple infections with {A}scaris lumbricoides, {T}richuris trichiura, and hookworm with micronutrient status (hemoglobin, plasma ferritin, retinol, zinc, and urinary iodine) were estimated by multiple regression analysis. {A}scaris infections showed a specific and intensity-dependent negative association with vitamin {A}. {T}richuris and hookworm infections were associated with lower hemoglobin concentration, but not with plasma ferritin. {T}richuris-infected children had zinc deficiency less often than uninfected children. {I}n conclusion, our study shows species-specific associations between {STH} infections and micronutrient status in children. {T}he different life cycles of {STH} species might have specific effects on the absorption or loss of specific micronutrients. {T}ailor-made combinations of deworming and nutritional interventions may be needed to improve child health and nutrition.}, keywords = {{VIET} {NAM}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {95}, numero = {1}, pages = {77--82}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.15-0533}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070006}, }
