@article{fdi:010070005, title = {{M}olecular epidemiology of blood-borne human parasites in a {L}oa loa-, {M}ansonella perstans-, and {P}lasmodium falciparum-endemic region of {C}ameroon}, author = {{D}rame, {P}. {M}. and {M}ontavon, {C}{\'e}line and {P}ion, {S}{\'e}bastien and {K}ubofcik, {J}. and {F}ay, {M}. {P}. and {N}utman, {T}. {B}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he study of the interactions among parasites within their hosts is crucial to the understanding of epidemiology of disease and for the design of effective control strategies. {W}e have conducted an assessment of infections with {L}oa loa, {M}ansonella perstans, {W}uchereria bancrofti, and {P}lasmodium falcipanim in eastern {C}ameroon using a highly sensitive and specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay using archived dried whole blood spots. {T}he resident population ({N} = 1,085) was parasitized with {M}. perstans (76%), {L}. loa (39%), and {P} falciparum (33%), but not with {W} bancrofti. {C}ompared with single infections (40.1%), coinfection was more common (48.8%): 21.0% had {L}. loa-{M}. perstans ({L}l(+)/{M}p(+)/{P}f(-)), 2.7% had {L}. loa-{P}. falciparum ({L}l(+)/{P}f(+)/{M}p(-)), 15.1% had {M}. perstans-{P}. falciparum ({M}p(+)/{P}r+/ {L}l(-)), and 10.0% had {L}. loa-{M}. perstans-{P} falciparum ({L}l(+)/{M}p(+)/{P}f(+)). {I}nterestingly, those with all three infections ({L}l(+)/{M}p+/{P}f) had significantly higher {L}. loa microfilaria (mf) counts than either single {L}l+ ({P} = 0.004) or double {L}l(+)/{M}p+ ({P} = 0.024) infected individuals. {O}f those infected with {L}. loa, the mean estimated counts of {L}. loa mf varied based on location and were positively correlated with estimated intensities of {M}. perstans mf. {F}inally, at a community level, heavy {L}. loa infections were concentrated in a few individuals whereby they were likely the major reservoir for infection.}, keywords = {{CAMEROUN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {T}ropical {M}edicine and {H}ygiene}, volume = {94}, numero = {6}, pages = {1301--1308}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.4269/ajtmh.15-0746}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010070005}, }
