@article{fdi:010069996, title = {{A} {Z}ika virus from {A}merica is more efficiently transmitted than an {A}sian virus by {A}edes aegypti mosquitoes from {A}sia}, author = {{P}ompon, {J}ulien and {M}orales-{V}argas, {R}. and {M}anuel, {M}. and {T}an, {C}. {H}. and {V}ial, {T}homas and {T}an, {J}. {H}. and {S}essions, {O}. {M}. and {V}asconcelos, {P}. {D}. {C}. and {N}g, {L}. {C}. and {M}iss{\'e}, {D}oroth{\'e}e}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{Z}ika is a mosquito-borne disease associated with neurological disorders that causes an on-going pandemic. {T}he first outbreak was recorded in {M}icronesia in 2007, then in {F}rench {P}olynesia in 2014 from which it spread to {S}outh {A}merica in 2015 and ignited a widespread epidemic. {I}nterestingly, {Z}ika outbreaks in {A}sia remained of moderate intensity although the virus is circulating. {T}o understand these epidemiological variations, we investigated the entomological determinants of {ZIKV} transmission in {A}sia. {W}e used oral infection of mosquitoes collected in {S}ingapore to identify the vector species, to quantify the blood infection threshold and to compare transmissibility between an {A}sian {ZIKV} strain ({H}/{PF}13) and an {A}merican strain collected in {B}razil ({BE} {H} 815744). {W}e have confirmed the vector status of {A}edes aegypti and determined that 10(3) pfu/ml of blood is sufficient to infect mosquitoes. {W}e showed that only the {A}merican strain was present in the saliva 3 days post-infection, and that this strain had a 30-40% higher rate of saliva infection in {A}e. aegypti from 3 to 14 days post-infection than the {A}sian strain. {O}ur data suggests that {A}merican strains are more efficiently transmitted than {A}sian strains, which raises concerns about the introduction of {A}merican strains in {A}sia.}, keywords = {{AMERIQUE} ; {ASIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {7}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 1215 [8 p.]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-017-01282-6}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069996}, }
