@article{fdi:010069968, title = {{C}yphastrea ({C}nidaria : {S}cleractinia : {M}erulinidae) in the {R}ed {S}ea : phylogeny and a new reef coral species}, author = {{A}rrigoni, {R}. and {B}erumen, {M}. {L}. and {H}uang, {D}. {W}. and {T}erraneo, {T}. {I}. and {B}enzoni, {F}rancesca}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he scleractinian coral {C}yphastrea is a common and widespread genus throughout the coral reefs of the {I}ndo-{P}acific. {L}ittle is known about the phylogenetic relationships within this taxon and species identification is based mainly on traditional skeletal characters, such as the number of septa, septa cycles, growth form and corallite dimensions. {H}ere we present the first focussed reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships among {C}yphastrea species, analysing 57 colonies from the {R}ed {S}ea, where five morphospecies live in sympatry. {A}nalyses based on three loci (nuclear histone {H}3, 28{S} r{DNA} and a mitochondrial intergenic region) reveal the existence of three well-supported molecular lineages. {N}one of the five previously defined morphospecies are monophyletic and they cluster into two clades, suggesting the need of a systematic revision in {C}yphastrea. {T}he third lineage is described as {C}. magna {B}enzoni & {A}rrigoni, sp. nov., a new reef coral species collected from the northern and central {R}ed {S}ea. {C}yphastrea magna {B}enzoni & {A}rrigoni, sp. nov. is characterised by the largest corallite diameter among known {C}yphastrea species, a wide trabecular columella >1/4 of calice width, and 12 equal primary septa. {T}his study suggests that morphology-based taxonomy in {C}yphastrea may not identify monophyletic units and strengthens the application of genetics in coral systematics.}, keywords = {{ARABIE} {SAOUDITE} ; {MER} {ROUGE} ; {AQABA} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nvertebrate {S}ystematics}, volume = {31}, numero = {2}, pages = {141--156}, ISSN = {1445-5226}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1071/is16035}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069968}, }
