@article{fdi:010069621, title = {{O}n the spatial coherence of rainfall over the {S}aloum delta ({S}enegal) from seasonal to decadal time scales}, author = {{W}ade, {M}. and {M}ignot, {J}uliette and {L}azar, {A}. and {G}aye, {A}.{T}. and {C}arr{\'e}, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} paleoreconstruction of the length and intensity of the rainy season over western {A}frica has been recently proposed, using analysis of fossil mollusk shells from the {S}aloum delta region, in western {S}enegal. {I}n order to evaluate the significance of local long-term reconstructions of precipitations from paleoclimate proxies, and to better characterize the spatial homogeneity of rainfall distribution in northern {A}frica, we analyze here the spatial representativeness of rainfall in this region, from seasonal to decadal timescales. {T}he spatial coherence of winter episodic rainfall events is relatively low and limited to surrounding countries. {O}n the other hand, the summer rainfall, associated with the {W}est {A}frican {M}onsoon, shows extended spatial coherence. {A}t seasonal timescales, local rainfall over the {S}aloum is significantly correlated with rainfall in the whole western half of the {S}ahel. {A}t interannual and longer timescales, the spatial coherence extends as far as the {R}ed {S}ea, covering the full {S}ahel region. {T}his spatial coherence is mainly associated to the zonal extension of the {I}nter {T}ropical {C}onvergence {Z}one ({ITCZ}). {C}oherently, summer rainfalls appear to be driven by {S}ea {S}urface {T}emperature ({SST}) anomalies mainly in the {P}acific, the {I}ndian {O}cean, the {M}editerranean basin, and the {N}orth {P}acific. {A} more detailed analysis shows that consistency of the spatial rainfall coherence is reduced during the onset season of the {W}est {A}frican {M}onsoon.}, keywords = {{PRECIPITATION} ; {VARIABILITE} ; {VARIATION} {TEMPORELLE} ; {PLUIE} ; {SAISON} {HUMIDE} ; {SAISON} {SECHE} ; {PALEOCLIMAT} ; {PLUVIOMETRIE} ; {METHODOLOGIE} ; {DELTA} ; {HOMOGENEISATION} {DES} {DONNEES} {PLUVIOMETRIQUES} ; {SENEGAL} ; {ZONE} {SAHELIENNE} ; {MONDE} ; {SINE} {SALOUM} {DELTA}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}rontiers in {E}arth {S}ciences}, numero = {}, pages = {art. no 30 [13 en ligne]}, ISSN = {2296-6463}, year = {2015}, DOI = {10.3389/feart.2015.00030}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069621}, }
