@article{fdi:010069540, title = {{A}leti {T}unu {B}ibi : contextualizing a new rock art site in {E}ast {T}imor and the wider {A}sia-{P}acific {R}egion}, author = {{G}alipaud, {J}ean-{C}hristophe and {K}inaston,, {R}. and {G}uillaud, {D}ominique}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ecent archaeological surveys and excavations on the island of {A}tauro, {E}ast {T}imor, identified several rock shelters with evidence for prehistoric occupation. {W}ell-preserved rock art was found at one of these sites, {A}leti {T}unu {B}ibi. {H}ere we present a description of the site and rock art, including the motifs and design elements, and interpret the site within the context of {E}ast {T}imor and the wider {A}sia-{P}acific region. {M}ost of the art was painted in red (likely ochre) or, in a few circumstances, black pigment (likely charcoal). {O}chre was found in {P}leistocene and early {H}olocene layers during excavations of the site. {T}he only observed drawing, the outline of a boat in dry black charcoal, may represent a "boat of the dead" similar to those depicted on {D}ongson drums in the region, one of which was found recently in {E}ast {T}imor. {T}hat a boat is depicted in the drawing suggests that it may have been executed sometime after 2000 b.p. {T}he {A}leti {T}unu {B}ibi rock art fits within the description of other {E}ast {T}imor painted rock art and shares some attributes with other sites in {E}ast {T}imor. {H}owever, the {A}leti {T}unu {B}ibi rock art is also distinct from sites on the mainland, and its presence on {A}tauro {I}sland supports previous hypotheses of substantial local or temporal variation, and possibly indicates a pre-{A}ustronesian origin for this tradition on the island.}, keywords = {{INDONESIE} ; {ASIE} {DU} {SUD} {EST} ; {TIMOR} {ORIENTAL} ; {TIMOR} {LESTE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}sian {P}erspectives}, volume = {55}, numero = {2}, pages = {128--147}, ISSN = {0066-8435}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1353/asi.2016.0016}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069540}, }
