@article{fdi:010069483, title = {{D}epressive symptoms among survivors of {E}bola virus disease in {C}onakry ({G}uinea) : preliminary results of the {P}ost{E}bo{G}ui cohort}, author = {{K}eita, {M}. {M}. and {T}averne, {B}ernard and {S}avane, {S}. {S}. and {M}arch, {L}aura and {D}oukoure, {M}. and {S}ow, {M}. {S}. and {T}oure, {A}. and {E}tard, {J}. {F}. and {B}arry, {M}. and {D}elaporte, {E}. and {P}ost{E}bo{G}ui {S}tudy {G}roup,}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he 2013-2016 {W}est {A}frican {E}bola outbreak infected 28,616 people and caused 11,310 deaths by 11 {M}ay 2016, across six countries. {T}he outbreak has also resulted in the largest number of {EVD} survivors in history-over 17,000. {G}uinea was declared {E}bola-free on 1 {J}une 2016. {R}eports from the outbreak documented 3814 cases resulting in 2544 deaths and 1270 survivors. {EVD} survivors face various neuropsychological and psycho-affective alterations that have not been fully identified yet. {T}his study aims to document the depressive symptoms among adult survivors in {G}uinea. {M}ethods: {D}epressive symptoms were investigated using the {F}rench version of the {C}enter for {E}pidemiologic {S}tudies-{D}epression {S}cale ({CES}-{D}) administered to all adult survivors (>= 20 years) participating in the {P}ost{E}bo{G}ui study and receiving care in {C}onakry. {T}he study was combined with a clinical consultation by a psychiatrist at the {D}onka {N}ational {H}ospital in {C}onakry that ensured adapted care was provided when needed. {R}esults: {O}verall, 256 adult participants receiving care in {C}onakry participated in this study: 55% were women, median age 31 years [{IQR}: 26-40]. {T}he median time since the {E}bola {T}reatment {C}enter ({ETC}) discharge was 8. 1 months [{IQR}: 4.1-11.7]. 15% had a score above the threshold values indicating psychological suffering (15% for men and 14% for women). 33 people (16 women and 17 men) met with the psychiatrist, which resulted in the diagnosis of 3 cases of post-traumatic stress disorder ({PTSD}), 3 cases of mild depression, 13 cases of moderate depression, and 11 cases of severe depression, including 1 with kinesthetic hallucinations and another with visual hallucinations, and 1 with suicidal ideation and 3 with attempted suicide. {S}evere depression was diagnosed between 1 and 19 months after {ETC} discharge. {T}he various identified forms of depression responded favorably to conventional drug therapies and cognitive behavioral therapy. {C}onclusion: {L}ong-term follow-up for {EVD} survivors will be necessary to understand the evolution of these pathologies. {I}n the current post-epidemic context, these cases underscore the need to strengthen mental health diagnostic systems and treatment on a national scale.}, keywords = {{GUINEE} ; {CONAKRY}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{BMC} {P}sychiatry}, volume = {17}, numero = {}, pages = {127 [9 ]}, ISSN = {1471-244{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1186/s12888-017-1280-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069483}, }
