@article{fdi:010069440, title = {{T}he role of rhizobial ({N}if{V}) and plant ({FEN}1) homocitrate synthases in {A}eschynomene/photosynthetic {B}radyrhizobium symbiosis}, author = {{N}ouwen, {N}ico and {A}rrighi, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {C}artieaux, {F}abienne and {C}haintreuil, {C}l{\'e}mence and {G}ully, {D}jamel and {K}lopp, {C}. and {G}iraud, {E}ric}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}n the most studied rhizobium-legume interactions, the host plant supplies the symbiont with homocitrate, an essential co-factor of the nitrogenase enzyme complex, via the expression of a nodule-specific homocitrate synthase {FEN}1. {P}hotosynthetic bradyrhizobia interacting with {N}od factor ({NF}) dependent and {NF}-independent {A}eschynomene legumes are able to synthesize homocitrate themselves as they contain a nif{V} gene encoding a homocitrate synthase. {H}ere, we show that in the model strain {ORS}285, nif{V} is required for free-living and symbiotic dinitrogen fixation with {NF}-independent {A}eschynomene species. {I}n contrast, in symbiosis with {NF}-dependent {A}eschynomene species, the nif{V} requirement for efficient nitrogen fixation was found to be host plant dependent. {I}nterestingly, orthologs of {FEN}1 were found in both {NF}-dependent and {NF}-independent {A}eschynomene species. {H}owever, a high nodule specific induction of {FEN}1 expression was only observed in {A}. afraspera, a host plant in which nif{V} is not required for symbiotic dinitrogen fixation. {T}hese data indicate that efficient symbiotic nitrogen fixation in many of the tested {A}eschynomene species requires rhizobial homocitrate synthesis. {C}onsidering that more than 10% of the fully sequenced rhizobium strains do contain a nif{V} gene, the {A}eschynomene/photosynthetic {B}radyrhizobium interaction is likely not the only rhizobium/legume symbiosis where rhizobial nif{V} expression is required.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}cientific {R}eports - {N}ature}, volume = {7}, numero = {}, pages = {art. 448 [10 ]}, ISSN = {2045-2322}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1038/s41598-017-00559-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069440}, }
