@article{fdi:010069416, title = {{C}haracterization of the first cultured representative of a {B}acteroidetes clade specialized on the scavenging of cyanobacteria}, author = {{B}en {H}ania, {W}. and {J}oseph, {M}anon and {B}unk, {B}. and {S}proer, {C}. and {K}lenk, {H}. {P}. and {F}ardeau, {M}arie-{L}aure and {S}pring, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he anaerobic, mesophilic and moderately halophilic strain {L}21-{S}pi-{D}4({T}) was recently isolated from the suboxic zone of a hypersaline cyanobacterial mat using protein-rich extracts of {A}rthrospira (formerly {S}pirulina) platensis as substrate. {P}hylogenetic analyses based on 16{S} r{RNA} genes indicated an affiliation of the novel strain with the {B}acteroidetes clade {M}g{M}j{R}-022, which is widely distributed and abundant in hypersaline microbial mats and heretofore comprised only sequences of uncultured bacteria. {A}nalyses of the complete genome sequence of strain {L}21-{S}pi-{D}4({T}) revealed a possible specialization on the degradation of cyanobacterial biomass. {B}esides genes for enzymes degrading specific cyanobacterial proteins a conspicuous transport complex for the polypeptide cyanophycin could be identified that is homologous to typical polysaccharide utilization loci of {B}acteroidetes. {A} distinct and reproducible co-occurrence pattern of environmental 16{S} r{RNA} gene sequences of the {M}g{M}j{R}-022 clade and cyanobacteria in the suboxic zone of hypersaline mats points to a specific dependence of members of this clade on decaying cyanobacteria. {B}ased on a comparative analysis of phenotypic, genomic and ecological characteristics we propose to establish the novel taxa {S}alinivirga cyanobacteriivorans gen. nov., sp. nov., represented by the type strain {L}21-{S}pi-{D}4({T}), and {S}alinivirgaceae fam. nov., comprising sequences of the {M}g{M}j{R}-022 clade.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {M}icrobiology}, volume = {19}, numero = {3}, pages = {1134--1148}, ISSN = {1462-2912}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1111/1462-2920.13639}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069416}, }
