@article{fdi:010069402, title = {{O}cular complications in survivors of the {E}bola outbreak in {G}uinea}, author = {{H}ereth-{H}ebert, {E}. and {B}ah, {M}. {O}. and {E}tard, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {S}ow, {M}. {S}. and {R}esnikoff, {S}. and {F}ardeau, {C}. and {T}oure, {A}. and {O}uendeno, {A}. {N}. and {S}agno, {I}. {C}. and {M}arch, {L}aura and {I}zard, {S}uzanne and {L}ama, {P}. {L}. and {B}arry, {M}. and {D}elaporte, {E}ric and {P}ostebola {S}tudy {G}roup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{PURPOSE}: {T}he {E}bola outbreak of 2013-2016 severely affected {W}est {A}frica and resulted in 2544 deaths and 1270 survivors in {G}uinea, the country where it began. {T}his {E}bola virus was the {Z}aire strain of the virus family {F}iloviridae. {I}n this outbreak the case fatality rate was about 67%. {T}he survivors, declared cured after 2 negative blood polymerase chain reaction ({PCR}) results, face psychosocial disorders and rheumatic, ear-nose-throat, neurocognitive, and ophthalmologic complications. {T}he goal of this study was to detect and describe ocular complications afflicting these survivors and to observe their occurrence and recurrences. {DESIGN}: {P}rospective observational cohort study. {METHODS}: {T}his prospective observational multicenter cohort study was initiated in {M}arch 2015. {T}he cohort study included 341 survivors followed up in the infectious disease ward of {C}onakry, {F}orecariah, and {N}zerekore as of {M}ay 2016. {T}he patients received multidisciplinary medical follow-up expected to last at least 1 year that included an eye examination as part of complete, free treatment. {RESULTS}: {S}ystematic examination of 341 patients revealed 46 cases of uveitis (13.5%), 6 cases of episcleritis (1.8%), and 3 cases of interstitial keratitis (0.9%). {U}veitis was most frequently unilateral (78.3%) and anterior (47.8%) and occurred within the 2 months after discharge from the {E}bola treatment center. {M}oreover, uveitis relapses were found up to 13 months after the negative {PCR} result for {E}bola in the blood. {CONCLUSION}; {N}early 1 out of 6 survivors presented ocular disorders after discharge from the {E}bola treatment center. {A}n ophthalmologic follow-up for {E}bola-infected patients should start, if possible, during the acute phase of the disease and last more than 1 year. {T}reatment guidelines need to be urgently developed and implemented.}, keywords = {{GUINEE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}merican {J}ournal of {O}phthalmology}, volume = {175}, numero = {}, pages = {114--121}, ISSN = {0002-9394}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ajo.2016.12.005}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069402}, }
