@article{fdi:010069380, title = {{G}enetic hitchhiking and resistance evolution to transgenic {B}t toxins : insights from the {A}frican stalk borer {B}usseola fusca ({N}octuidae)}, author = {{C}ampagne, {P}. and {C}apdevielle {D}ulac, {C}laire and {P}asquet, {R}{\'e}my and {C}ornell, {S}. {J}. and {K}ruger, {M}. and {S}ilvain, {J}ean-{F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {L}e {R}ΓΌ, {B}runo and {V}an den {B}erg, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}ince transgenic crops expressing {B}acillus thuringiensis ({B}t) toxins were first released, resistance evolution leading to failure in control of pests populations has been observed in a number of species. {F}ield resistance of the moth {B}usseola fusca was acknowledged 8 years after {B}t maize was introduced in {S}outh {A}frica. {S}ince then, field resistance of this corn borer has been observed at several locations, raising questions about the nature, distribution and dynamics of the resistance trait. {U}sing genetic markers, our study identified four outlier loci clearly associated with resistance. {I}n addition, genetic structure at neutral loci reflected extensive gene flow among populations. {A} realistically parameterised model suggests that resistance could travel in space at speed of several kilometres a year. {M}arkers at outlier loci delineated a geographic region associated with resistance spread. {T}his was an area of approximately 100 km radius, including the location where resistance was first reported. {C}ontrolled crosses corroborated these findings and showed significant differences of progeny survival on {B}t plants depending on the origin of the resistant parent. {L}ast, our study suggests diverse resistance mutations, which would explain the widespread occurrence of resistant larvae in {B}t fields across the main area of maize production in {S}outh {A}frica.}, keywords = {{AFRIQUE} {DU} {SUD}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}eredity}, volume = {118}, numero = {4}, pages = {330--339}, ISSN = {0018-067{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1038/hdy.2016.104}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069380}, }
