@article{fdi:010069370, title = {{A}cceptability of outpatient ready-to-use food-based protocols in {HIV}-infected {S}enegalese children and adolescents within the {MAGGSEN} cohort study}, author = {{C}ames, {C}{\'e}cile and {V}arloteaux, {M}arie and {H}ave, {N}. {N}. and {D}iom, {A}. {B}. and {M}sellati, {P}hilippe and {M}baye, {N}. and {M}bodj, {H}. and {S}ignate, {H}. {S}. and {D}iack, {A}. and {MAGGSEN} {C}ohort {S}tudy {G}roup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjectives:{T}o assess the acceptability of ready-to-use food ({RUF})-based outpatient protocols in {HIV}-infected children and adolescents with severe acute malnutrition ({SAM}) and moderate acute malnutrition ({MAM}). {M}ethods:{P}lumpy {N}ut and {P}lumpy {S}up were supplied every 2 weeks and prescribed by weight to {SAM} and {MAM} children, respectively. {F}orty-three children, 24 {MAM} and 19 {SAM}, were enrolled. {O}rganoleptic appreciation, feeding modalities, and perceptions surrounding {RUF} were recorded at week 2. {S}achets were counted to measure adherence throughout the study. {R}esults:{M}edian age was 12.2 years (interquartile range: 9.3-14.8), and 91% were on antiretroviral treatment. {O}verall, 80%, 76%, 68%, and 68% of children initially rated {RUF} color, taste, smell, and mouth feeling as good. {H}owever, feelings of disgust, refusal to eat, fragmentation of intake, self-stigma, and sharing within the household were commonly reported. {E}ighteen {MAM} and 7 {SAM} experienced weight recovery. {R}ecovery duration was 54 days (31-90) in {MAM} versus 114 days (69-151) in {SAM} children ({P} = .02). {T}heir rate of {RUF} consumption compared to amount prescribed was approximately 50% from week 2 to week 10. {N}ine failed to gain weight or consume {RUF} and were discontinued for clinical management, and 9 dropped out due to distance to the clinic. {C}onclusion:{I}nitial {RUF} acceptability was satisfactory. {M}ore than half the children had successful weight recovery, although adherence to {RUF} prescription was suboptimal. {H}owever, further research is needed to propose therapeutic foods with improved palatability, alternative and simpler intervention design, and procedures for continuous and tailored psychosocial support in this vulnerable population.}, keywords = {acute malnutrition ; acceptability ; {HIV} ; ready-to-use therapeutic food ; adolescents ; {A}frica ; {SENEGAL}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{F}ood and {N}utrition {B}ulletin}, volume = {38}, numero = {1}, pages = {27--36}, ISSN = {0379-5721}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1177/0379572116679053}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010069370}, }
