@article{fdi:010068948, title = {{A} modeling study of processes controlling the {B}ay of {B}engal sea surface salinity interannual variability}, author = {{A}khil, {V}. {P}. and {L}engaigne, {M}atthieu and {V}ialard, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {D}urand, {F}abien and {K}eerthi, {M}. {G}. and {C}haitanya, {A}. {V}. {S}. and {P}apa, {F}abrice and {G}opalakrishna, {V}. {V}. and {M}ontegut, {C}. {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ecent observational studies provided preliminary insights on the interannual variability of {B}ay of {B}engal ({B}o{B}) {S}ea {S}urface {S}alinity ({SSS}), but are limited by the poor data coverage. {H}ere, we describe the {B}o{B} interannual {SSS} variability and its driving processes from a regional eddy-permitting ocean general circulation model forced by interannually varying air-sea fluxes and altimeter-derived discharges of major rivers over the past two decades. {S}imulated interannual {SSS} variations compare favorably with both in situ and satellite data and are largest in boreal fall in three regions: the northern {B}o{B}, the coastal region off east {I}ndia, and the {A}ndaman {S}ea. {I}n the northern {B}o{B}, these variations are independent from those in other regions and mostly driven by summer-fall {G}anga-{B}rahmaputra runoff interannual variations. {I}n fall, remote forcing from the {I}ndian {O}cean {D}ipole results in anticlockwise anomalous horizontal currents that drive interannual {SSS} variations of opposite polarity along the east coast of {I}ndia and in the {S}outhern {A}ndaman {S}ea. {F}rom winter onward, these anomalies are damped by vertical mixing in the northern {B}o{B} and along the east coast of {I}ndia and by horizontal advection in the {S}outhern {A}ndaman {S}ea. {W}hile river runoff fluctuations locally play a strong role near the {G}anga-{B}rahmaputra river mouth, wind-driven interannual current anomalies are responsible for a large fraction of {SSS} interannual variability in most of the basin.}, keywords = {{OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {BENGALE} {GOLFE} ; {ANDAMAN} {MER}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {O}ceans}, volume = {121}, numero = {12}, pages = {8471--8495}, ISSN = {2169-9275}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1002/2016jc011662}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068948}, }
