@article{fdi:010068777, title = {{E}ffect of light intensity on early ontogeny of {A}frican sharptooth catfish, {C}larias gariepinus ({B}urchell)}, author = {{P}rokesova, {M}. and {S}tejskal, {V}. and {M}atousek, {J}. and {K}ouril, {J}. and {B}aras, {E}tienne}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}ight intensity during the early life stages of fish can have profound effects on their survival, developmental rate, yolk utilization efficiency and body size. {H}ere, these aspects were analysed during two separate experiments (with or without exogenous food) on two distinct progenies of {A}frican sharptooth catfish, at five different light intensities (<0.1, 70, 500, 2500 and 8000 {L}x; 24{L}:0{D}, 27.2 degrees {C}). {T}he duration of the egg incubation period (from 1.01 to 1.25days post fertilization, d{PF}) was inversely proportional to light intensity, as hatching took place at more precocious developmental stages with increasing light intensity, i.e. at significantly ({P}<0.05) shorter body length and slightly more abundant remaining yolk at 8000{L}x in comparison to <0.1{L}x. {A}t the start of exogenous feeding (4 d{PF}), most of these differences had vanished. {D}uring the period of mixed feeding (until the end of yolk absorption, 11 d{PF}), growth decreased significantly with increasing light intensity. {D}aily mortality rates after hatching varied very little between light intensities. {M}ortality during egg incubation increased significantly ({P}<0.05) with increasing light intensity, whereas it varied very little between light intensities thereafter, with the best survival rates since fertilization until the end of yolk absorption obtained at intermediate light intensities (70-2500{L}x). {T}hese results could be useful for improving the performance of {A}frican sharptooth catfish hatcheries.}, keywords = {{C}lariidae ; yolk absorption ; growth ; survival ; hatchery management}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quaculture {R}esearch}, volume = {48}, numero = {1}, pages = {347--355}, ISSN = {1355-557{X}}, year = {2017}, DOI = {10.1111/are.13116}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068777}, }
