@article{fdi:010068745, title = {{I}mproved bathymetric dataset and tidal model for the {N}orthern {B}ay of {B}engal}, author = {{K}rien, {Y}. and {M}ayet, {C}. and {T}estut, {L}. and {D}urand, {F}abien and {T}azkia, {A}. {R}. and {I}slam, {A}kms and {G}opalakrishna, {V}. {V}. and {B}ecker, {M}. and {C}almant, {S}t{\'e}phane and {S}hum, {C}. {K}. and {K}han, {Z}. {H}. and {P}apa, {F}abrice and {B}allu, {V}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {B}engal {D}elta is a highly complex and vulnerable environment where key dynamical features such as tides, storm surges, salinity, and sediment transport strongly depend on the accurate bottom topography representation. {T}o curb the lack of accuracy of widely used global bathymetry databases in this shallow region, we produced an improved coastal bathymetry for the {B}engal {D}elta through an exhaustive and thorough compilation of 70 nautical charts and river surveys. {W}e merged this bathymetry dataset with a high-resolution digital evaluation model, resulting in a novel, consistent product with unprecedented coverage, from the deep parts of the ocean basin (north of 20 degrees {N}) to the far upstream areas of the delta (around 24 degrees {N}). {T}his new bathymetry reduces errors in the tidal residuals by a factor of 2-3 for most coastal gauges as compared to global tidal models. {T}he best results are obtained for the {H}ooghly {R}iver, where errors are as low as 6cm. {T}he improvement in the mouth of the {M}eghna is moderate, suggesting the possible rapid evolution of the bathymetry due to strong sediment transport. {T}his new bathymetry is expected to significantly improve the modeling of coastal processes such as storm surges in the northern {B}ay of {B}engal.}, keywords = {{B}athymetry ; {B}ay of {B}engal ; ocean tides ; {OCEAN} {INDIEN} ; {BENGALE} {GOLFE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {G}eodesy}, volume = {39}, numero = {6}, pages = {422--438}, ISSN = {0149-0419}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1080/01490419.2016.1227405}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068745}, }
