@article{fdi:010068733, title = {{A}ctive tectonics of {P}eru : heterogeneous interseismic coupling along the {N}azca megathrust, rigid motion of the {P}eruvian {S}liver, and {S}ubandean shortening accommodation}, author = {{V}illegas-{L}anza, {J}. {C}. and {C}hlieh, {M}ohamed and {C}avalie, {O}. and {T}avera, {H}. and {B}aby, {P}atrice and {C}hire-{C}hira, {J}. and {N}ocquet, {J}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}ver 100 {GPS} sites measured in 2008-2013 in {P}eru provide new insights into the present-day crustal deformation of the 2200 km long {P}eruvian margin. {T}his margin is squeezed between the eastward subduction of the oceanic {N}azca {P}late at the {S}outh {A}merica trench axis and the westward continental subduction of the {S}outh {A}merican {P}late beneath the {E}astern {C}ordillera and {S}ubandean orogenic wedge. {C}ontinental active faults and {GPS} data reveal the rigid motion of a {P}eruvian {F}orearc {S}liver that extends from the oceanic trench axis to the {W}estern-{E}astern {C}ordilleras boundary and moves southeastward at 4-5 mm/yr relative to a stable {S}outh {A}merica reference frame. {GPS} data indicate that the {S}ubandean shortening increases southward by 2 to 4 mm/yr. {I}n a {P}eruvian {S}liver reference frame, the residual {GPS} data indicate that the interseismic coupling along the {N}azca megathrust is highly heterogeneous. {C}oupling in northern {P}eru is shallow and coincides with the site of previous moderate-sized and shallow tsunami-earthquakes. {D}eep coupling occurs in central and southern {P}eru, where repeated large and great megathrust earthquakes have occurred. {T}he strong correlation between highly coupled areas and large ruptures suggests that seismic asperities are persistent features of the megathrust. {C}reeping segments appear at the extremities of great ruptures and where oceanic fracture zones and ridges enter the subduction zone, suggesting that these subducting structures play a major role in the seismic segmentation of the {P}eruvian margin. {I}n central {P}eru, we estimate a recurrence time of 305 +/- 40 years to reproduce the great 1746 {M}-w similar to 8.8 {L}ima-{C}allao earthquake.}, keywords = {{PEROU} ; {ANDES}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eophysical {R}esearch : {S}olid {E}arth}, volume = {121}, numero = {10}, pages = {7371--7394}, ISSN = {2169-9313}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1002/2016jb013080}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068733}, }
