@article{fdi:010068731, title = {{L}oop current frontal eddies : formation along the {C}ampeche {B}ank and impact of coastally trapped waves}, author = {{J}ouanno, {J}ulien and {O}choa, {J}. and {P}allas-{S}anz, {E}. and {S}heinbaum, {J}. and {A}ndrade-{C}anto, {F}. and {C}andela, {J}. and {M}olines, {J}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}elocity data from a mooring array deployed northeast of the {C}ampeche {B}ank ({CB}) show the presence of subinertial, high-frequency (below 15 days) velocity fluctuations within the core of the northward flowing {L}oop {C}urrent. {T}hese fluctuations are associated with the presence of surface-intensified {L}oop {C}urrent frontal eddies ({LCFE}s), with cyclonic vorticity and diameter, 100 km. {T}hese eddies are well reproduced by a high-resolution numerical simulation of the {G}ulf of {M}exico, and the model analysis suggests that they originate along and north of the {CB}, their main energy source being the mixed baroclinic-barotropic instability of the northward flow along the shelf break. {T}here is no indication that these high-frequency {LCFE}s contribute to the {LC} eddy detachment in contrast to the low-frequency {LCFE}s (periods. 30 days) that have been linked to {C}aribbean eddies and the {LC} separation process. {M}odel results show that wind variability associated with winter cold surges are responsible for the emergence of high-frequency {LCFE}s in a narrow band of periods (6-10 day) in the region of the {CB}. {T}he dynamical link between the formation of these {LCFE}s and the wind variability is not direct: (i) the large-scale wind perturbations generate sea level anomalies on the {CB} as well as first baroclinic mode, coastally trapped waves in the western {G}ulf of {M}exico; (ii) these waves propagate cyclonically along the coast; and (iii) the interaction of these anomalies with the {L}oop {C}urrent triggers cyclonic vorticity perturbations that grow in intensity as they propagate downstream and develop into cyclonic eddies when they flow north of the {Y}ucatan shelf.}, keywords = {{ETATS} {UNIS} ; {FLORIDE} ; {GOLFE} {DU} {MEXIQUE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {P}hysical {O}ceanography}, volume = {46}, numero = {11}, pages = {3339--3363}, ISSN = {0022-3670}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1175/jpo-d-16-0052.1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068731}, }
