@article{fdi:010068714, title = {{A}ssessment of trace metal air pollution in {P}aris using slurry-{TXRF} analysis on cemetery mosses}, author = {{N}atali, {M}. and {Z}anella, {A}. and {R}ankovic, {A}. and {B}anas, {D}. and {C}antaluppi, {C}. and {A}bbadie, {L}uc and {L}ata, {J}. {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}osses are useful, ubiquitous accumulation biomonitors and as such can be used for biomonitoring surveys. {H}owever, the biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution can be compromised in urban contexts if the targeted biomonitors are regularly disturbed, irregularly distributed, or are difficult to access. {H}ere, we test the hypothesis that cemeteries are appropriate moss sampling sites for the evaluation of air pollution in urban areas. {W}e sampled mosses growing on gravestones in 21 urban and peri-urban cemeteries in the {P}aris metropolitan area. {W}e focused on {G}rimmia pulvinata ({H}edwig) {S}mith, a species abundantly found in all studied cemeteries and very common in {E}urope. {T}he concentration of {A}l, {A}s, {B}r, {C}a, {C}e, {C}l, {C}r, {C}u, {F}e, {K}, {M}n, {N}i, {V}, {P}, {P}b, {R}b, {S}, {S}r, {T}i, and {Z}n was determined by a total reflection {X}-ray fluorescence technique coupled with a slurry sampling method (slurry-{TXRF}). {T}his method avoids a digestion step, reduces the risk of sample contamination, and works even at low sample quantities. {E}lemental markers of road traffic indicated that the highest polluted cemeteries were located near the highly frequented {P}arisian ring road and under the influence of prevailing winds. {T}he sites with the lowest pollution were found not only in the peri-urban cemeteries, adjoining forest or farming landscapes, but also in the large and relatively wooded cemeteries located in the center of {P}aris. {O}ur results suggest that (1) slurry-{TXRF} might be successfully used with moss material, (2) {G}. pulvinata might be a good biomonitor of trace metals air pollution in urban context, and (3) cemetery moss sampling could be a useful complement for monitoring urban areas.}, keywords = {{T}race metals ; {A}ir pollution ; {B}iological indicator ; {C}emeteries ; {G}rimmia pulvinata ; {T}otal reflection {X}-ray ; fluorescence ; {U}rban areas ; {FRANCE} ; {PARIS}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}nvironmental {S}cience and {P}ollution {R}esearch}, volume = {23}, numero = {23}, pages = {23496--23510}, ISSN = {0944-1344}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s11356-016-7445-z}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068714}, }
