@article{fdi:010068670, title = {{P}hylogeny, classification and biogeography of {H}alfordia ({R}utaceae) in {A}ustralia and {N}ew {C}aledonia}, author = {{B}ayly, {M}. {J}. and {H}olmes, {G}. {D}. and {F}orster, {P}. {I}. and {M}unzinger, {J}{\'e}r{\^o}me and {C}antrill, {D}. {J}. and {L}adiges, {P}. {Y}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}alfordia {F}.{M}uell is a genus of rainforest trees or shrubs native to {N}ew {G}uinea, {N}ew {B}ritain, {N}ew {C}aledonia, {V}anuatu and eastern {A}ustralia. {T}here is debate about the number of species that should be recognised in the genus. {F}our species have been named, but authors have commonly recognised only two species, and some recent treatments accept just one widespread species with a broad ecological range. {W}e sequenced two nr{DNA} markers ({ITS} and {ETS}) and two cp{DNA} markers (rbc{L} and trn{L}-trn{F}) from samples across the range of {H}alfordia in {A}ustralia and {N}ew {C}aledonia. {T}hree allopatric nr{DNA} groups were resolved: one from southeast {Q}ueensland and northern {N}ew {S}outh {W}ales ({G}roup {A}); one from the {W}et {T}ropics region of {N}orth {Q}ueensland ({G}roup {B}); and one from the {C}ape {Y}ork region of {N}orth {Q}ueensland, {T}orres {S}trait and {N}ew {C}aledonia ({G}roup {C}). {T}hese groups were also partly differentiated by more slowly evolving cp{DNA} markers; the exception was one widespread haplotype in {A}ustralia (presumed ancestral). {T}he nr{DNA} groups support recognition of three previously described species: {H}. leichhardtii ({G}roup {A}), {H}. scleroxyla ({G}roup {B}) and {H}. kendack ({G}roup {C}). {D}ivergences among eastern {A}ustralia populations are best explained by vicariance and correlate with geographic breaks documented for other taxa (ranging in estimated ages from the mid-late {M}iocene to the {P}leistocene). {T}he broad distribution of {G}roup {C}, from {C}ape {Y}ork to {N}ew {C}aledonia, with less genetic divergence, arguably reflects recent range expansion into {N}ew {C}aledonia involving bird dispersal of fleshy fruits.}, keywords = {{A}ustralian rainforests ; {D}ispersal ; {N}ew {C}aledonia ; {T}axonomy ; {V}icariance ; {AUSTRALIE} ; {NOUVELLE} {CALEDONIE}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {S}ystematics and {E}volution}, volume = {302}, numero = {10}, pages = {1457--1470}, ISSN = {0378-2697}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s00606-016-1344-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068670}, }
