@article{fdi:010068358, title = {{C}omparative assessment of spatiotemporal snow cover changes and hydrological behavior of the {G}ilgit, {A}store and {H}unza {R}iver basins ({H}indukush-{K}arakoram-{H}imalaya region, {P}akistan)}, author = {{T}ahir, {A}. {A}. and {A}damowski, {J}. {F}. and {C}hevallier, {P}ierre and {U}l {H}aq, {A}. and {T}erzago, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {U}pper {I}ndus {B}asin ({UIB}), situated in the {H}imalaya-{K}arakoram-{H}indukush ({HKH}) mountain ranges, is the major contributor to the supply of water for irrigation in {P}akistan. {I}mproved management of downstream water resources requires studying and comparing spatiotemporal changes in the snow cover and hydrological behavior of the river basins located in the {HKH} region. {T}his study explored in detail the recent changes that have occurred in the {G}ilgit {R}iver basin (12,656 km(2); western sub-basin of {UIB}), which is characterized by a mean catchment elevation of 4250 m above sea level (m {ASL}). {T}he basin's snow cover was monitored through the snow products provided by the {MODIS} satellite sensor, while analysis of its hydrological regime was supported by hydrological and climatic data recorded at different altitudes. {T}he {G}ilgit basin findings were compared to those previously obtained for the lower-altitude {A}store basin (mean catchment elevation = 4100 m {ASL}) and the higher-altitude {H}unza basin (mean catchment elevation = 4650 m {ASL}). {T}hese three catchments were selected because of their different glacier coverage, contrasting area distribution at high altitudes and significant impact on the {U}pper {I}ndus {R}iver flow. {A}lmost 7, 5 and 33 % of the area of the {G}ilgit, {A}store and {H}unza basins, respectively, are situated above 5000 m {ASL}, and approximately 8, 6 and 25 %, respectively, are covered by glaciers. {T}he {UIB} region was found to follow a stable or slightly increasing trend in snow coverage and had a discharge dominated by snow and glacier melt in its western ({H}indukush-{K}arakoram), southern ({W}estern-{H}imalaya) and northern ({C}entral-{K}arakoram) sub-basins.}, keywords = {{PAKISTAN} ; {HINDUKUSH} ; {KARAKORAM} ; {HIMALAYA} ; {HUNZA} {BASSIN} ; {GILGIT} {BASSIN} ; {ASTORE} {BASSIN}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}eteorology and {A}tmospheric {P}hysics}, volume = {128}, numero = {6}, pages = {793--811}, ISSN = {0177-7971}, year = {2016}, DOI = {10.1007/s00703-016-0440-6}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010068358}, }
